On the 200th anniversary of the birth of Friedrich Engels, his biographer Tristram Hunt looks at how both Engels and Karl Marx were deeply affected by their time in London in the second half of the 19th century. Uploaded 11-06-26London, then the heart of the British Empire, transformed the thinking of these two revolutionary philosophers on finance, on working people's lives, on cities, and on women voting. Hunt will look at the remarkable personal and family lives of the 'The Old Londoners' as they became known, in their North London homes at Primrose Hill and Chalk Farm.A lecture by Dr Tristram Hunt 6 OctoberThe transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/engels-marxGresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. Trade and craft associations have flourished all over Europe for many centuries, but the City of London companies, now collectively known as the Livery, are unique in their survival, number and diversity. The social and economic conditions which gave birth to the original guilds have long since been overtaken by the development of industry and commerce, but the livery companies still flourish today as living institutions. Their survival has been achieved by doing what they have always done: fostering their trade in a wide context, serving the community, and embracing modern skills and professions.Uploaded 17-01-12The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website:http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/the-pursuit-of-happinessGresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. In the 50 years since the hospice movement started, lessons from research have revolutionised care of the dying in the UK and in many places around the world. Yet the cruel myth that opioids shorten the lives of those with severe pain from cancer and other diseases leaves many denied the treatment they deserve. Those watching the person they love die carry the memory for the rest of their lives. Uploaded 10-06-26The concept of a 'good death', and how it can be achieved will be discussed, including the importance of open conversations with children being bereaved. Discussion will also tackle some of the issues around physician- assisted suicide and euthanasia.A lecture by Baroness Finlay of Llandaff, Independent Crossbench member of the House of Lords 9 April 2019The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/dying-todayGresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. In the midst of the current economic depression, "regulation" has become of buzz-word. But what is regulation and what makes a good regulator?Uploaded 11-11-11These topics are address in this lecture by Sarah Veale, Head of the Equality and Employment Rights Department, Trades Union Congress. Her lecture establishes the following three main points:1) Governments over-regulate when they do not understand risk;2) Business claims about over-regulation are largely based on a fraudulent premise;3) Some alternatives to regulation are regulation in disguise.Together they bring about the conclusion that a good regulator will properly understand risk, will be wary of lobbyists and will look carefully at any proposed alternatives to regulation. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website:http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/what-makes-a-good-regulator-1Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597.
