Oxygen Advantage

Show Notes

“The Foundation of Breathing is, it’s Good for Health, for Relaxation and Rebalancing.” On the latest episode of the Oxygen Advantage® podcast Patrick and Daniel are delighted to welcome OA Master Instructor and Strength & Conditioning coach Leo Daniel Ryan. Leo is a great example of one of Patrick’s success stories. Prior to learning Buteyko from Patrick, Leo was bedridden with asthma for six months, was on three inhalers, 14 courses of antibiotics and took 425 steroid tablets in that time. Eighteen months later, medication and symptom free, he went back to sports and would go on to become a trainer and strength and conditioning coach which he continues to this day. It was on his return to sport and more specifically running for the first time in seven years, that Leo decided to track his progress during a marathon with surprisingly good results when it came to his breathing efficiency. With Leo Ryan’s own testing as a guide through breathing during athletic output of both aerobic and anaerobic, this is an in-depth podcast on the science of breathing and movement. What if the key to running further, calmer, and healthier wasn't in your legs — but in your nose? In this episode, Patrick McKeown sits down with Dr. Bill Hang: orthodontist, airway pioneer, and marathon runner approaching his 80th birthday. After hearing Patrick speak 15 years ago, Bill made two decisions that changed his life — taping his mouth at night and running with his lips sealed. He's since run the Boston Marathon multiple times breathing entirely through his nose, including once with his mouth taped the whole way. But this conversation goes far beyond running. Dr. Hang shares why he walked away from traditional extraction orthodontics, how forward jaw development can transform a child's airway, and what every parent should know before agreeing to have their child's teeth removed.
