Clayface Review - Good Horror or Horrible?

Adam Does Movies

Summary

The film "Clayface" presents a fresh take on the iconic DC villain, focusing on Matt Hagen, a struggling actor who finds himself in a downward spiral after a fateful night out in Gotham. The narrative follows Hagen's journey from fame to despair, culminating in his transformation into Clayface, a character capable of changing his appearance at will. The film, directed by James Watkins and written by Mike Flanagan, is noted for its grounded approach and engaging script, which sets it apart from previous adaptations of superhero narratives.

While the film has received praise for its pacing and character development, it also faces criticism for its portrayal of Gotham, which lacks the vibrancy expected from the city associated with Batman. The depiction of body horror elements is a significant aspect of the film, with some scenes described as intense and potentially off-putting for viewers sensitive to gore. Despite these critiques, the film is recognized for its serious tone and exploration of themes such as tragedy and revenge, ultimately delivering a compelling villain's origin story.

The performance of Tom Rice Harris as Matt Hagen is highlighted as a strong point, with his character's emotional journey resonating with audiences. The film's music and cinematography contribute to its overall atmosphere, although it remains to be seen how "Clayface" fits into the broader DC Universe under James Gunn's direction. Overall, the film has surprised many viewers, offering a satisfying experience despite initial skepticism surrounding its premise.

Show Notes

Clayface Movie Review - The DCU brings the villain Clayface to the big screen. A bit of a puzzling move when the last two movies in the James Gunn universe were overly colorful Superman/Supergirl films. Clayface is anything but that. It's dark, somber and features a character who will go through some major changes.

Clayface was written by Mike Flanagan, directed by James Watkins and stars Tom Rhys Harries, Naomi Ackie, Ruby Sear and Max Minghella.

Sacrifice (2026) Movie Review - Netflix has another crappy film trending this week. It's called "Sacrifice" and it stars Chris Evans and Anya Taylor-Joy. Much like Digger, this is a dark comedy that focuses in climate change and the hypocrisy of those in power.

Wildwood Review - A brand new stop-motion film called "Wildwood" hits theaters very soon. It's based on an epic book, full of magic and epic battles. Travis Knight captures the amazing world with wonderful animations but the formula feels very familiar and the long runtime doesn't do much to build out the world.

Street Fighter (2026) Explained - Street Fighter is an absolute mess in the story department. There are so many little plots going on and so many characters to juggle, the film just can't be bothered to closing many of them out. I do my best to recap the film from beginning to end.
