Mike Flynn says American men have "soft hands and weak spines." I was an engineering director at American Express. I've sat on the other side of the hiring decision, and his explanation leaves the people controlling the jobs out of the picture.
I look at the payroll data, Amazon's AI workforce plans, reduced hiring of young workers, lowball salaries, H-1B and offshoring incentives, graduate underemployment, and the cost of building a life. If you want men to provide for families, take the wage, the rent, and the route into stable work seriously.
Keep moving. Learn a skill. Apply. Build something. You can take responsibility for your next move without accepting a layoff or rejection as a verdict on your character.

Participation includes people looking for work. The graduate figures include men and women. Amazon's corporate cuts are not a verified count of young American men replaced by AI, and the Stanford findings do not establish causation.

Your first job should pay you to learn. I talk about the advice I gave a young engineer, the skills worth developing as AI changes software work, and why a small company or your own business may offer a better path than the corporate ladder. I handed Instinct my Verizon bill and told it to negotiate. It came back with 25% off for a year. Meanwhile, I'm on the couch holding a newborn, sending the whole request through iMessage. This is my unsponsored test of Instinct AI: unused card benefits, unclaimed-property paperwork, Amazon orders, and a shipment of melted protein bars that turned into a refund and a replacement. I also try calling it and find out voice access isn't open to me yet.The part I keep coming back to is the business model. Why keep the assistant free? I look at reports about Instinct's ambitions in chips and data centers, and why I think the app is only part of the story.Discord, newsletter, and everything I'm building:https://drjoshcsimmons.com/linksAsk in Discord about Instinct invites.
