What is Mental Conditioning?

Academy of Ideas

Summary

In 1950, North Korea's invasion of South Korea, backed by China, sparked the Korean War, prompting a significant response from the United Nations and the United States. The U.S. contributed approximately 300,000 troops, making up 90% of the UN forces. Upon their release from prisoner-of-war camps, many American soldiers exhibited unexpected behavior, advocating for communism instead of sharing traumatic experiences. This phenomenon led the U.S. government to enlist CIA operative Edward Hunter, who introduced the term "brainwashing" to describe the psychological manipulation employed by the Chinese.

Hunter's concept of brainwashing involves the systematic replacement of established beliefs with new ideologies, often achieved through extreme psychological stress. British psychiatrist William Sargent expanded on this idea, suggesting that brainwashing techniques mirror those used in therapy and religious conversion, where intense emotional experiences can lead to rapid belief changes. Sargent noted that the imposition of severe emotional strain can render individuals highly suggestible, making them susceptible to adopting new beliefs.

The discussion also highlights historical examples of emotional manipulation, such as the sermons of John Wesley, who used fear to induce emotional breakdowns in his audience, leading to mass conversions. While Sargent recognized the potential therapeutic benefits of such techniques, he warned of their misuse for control and manipulation by those in power. The narrative concludes with a caution against succumbing to fear-driven narratives from political leaders, advocating instead for a stance of indifference and humor as a means of resisting manipulation.

Show Notes

In this lecture we investigate the phenomenon of brainwashing. We describe the 20th century British psychiatrist William Sargant's ideas regarding how the victim of brainwashing is similar to the religious convert and the therapy patient who undergo 'sudden conversions'. We finish the lecture by looking at how fear can be used as tool for 'mass brainwashing'.
