Summary
European colonization of South Africa from the 1650s to the late 1800s involved the violent displacement of indigenous communities by Dutch and British forces, who sought to exploit the region's natural resources. Despite the presence of established African populations, colonizers propagated the "empty land theory," claiming the land was uninhabited and thus available for settlement. This narrative was supported by various colonial administrators and historians, who argued that indigenous communities had no rightful claim to the land, a perspective that was fundamentally flawed.
The empty land myth facilitated the passing of laws like the Glenn Gray Act in 1894, which effectively stripped native Africans of land ownership and created a class of landless individuals. This legal framework was accompanied by a broader strategy to portray indigenous people as uncivilized, justifying their subjugation and the appropriation of their lands. The repercussions of these policies led to systemic racism, with Africans barred from skilled jobs and forced into segregated living conditions, ultimately culminating in the institutionalized racism of apartheid.
Resistance movements throughout the 20th century sought to reclaim political and economic rights, and recent archaeological research has helped to correct the historical narrative regarding indigenous land ownership. Today, South African education systems are beginning to reflect this more accurate history, yet the legacy of the empty land myth continues to impact societal structures and relationships in the region and beyond.

Examine the empty land theory, which was created by European colonizers in South Africa to support their claims to the region.--From the 1650s through the late 1800’s, European colonists descended on South Africa. They sought to claim the region, becoming even more aggressive after discovering the area’s abundant natural resources. To support their claims to the land, the colonizers asserted they were settling in empty land devoid of local people. Was this argument true? Explore what happened after the Big Bang and how the battle between gravity and pressure shaped the structure of our universe.--It’s time for the biggest battle in the Universe: the Big Bang. In one corner is gravity— the force that brings all matter together. In the other is pressure— the force that can push matter away. Over the next several hundred thousand years, these two contenders will be wrestling for the fate of the Universe. But what are these powers fighting over?
