The radios have been dead for a night and a day, and Camp Ridge knows what its own doctrine says about that. When the county goes quiet, something is arriving. Into that silence, a hundred and three people send their strongest backs two miles northeast in the dark, because an abandoned farmstead holds weeks of sealed food, and winter does not negotiate. The cache was named weeks ago, back when it was a someday. The siege made it unreachable. The siege broke. The someday is tonight. Hope is the bait in this one. A full larder in a collapsed county is the best thing that has happened to the camp since eleven children came through the wire alive, and it is exactly the kind of best thing the county uses. Big finds carry owners, or watchers, or a cost that has not introduced itself yet. Mark Smith wants the retrieval slow and controlled. Other voices want volume and speed before the window shuts. Both sides are right, and that is the danger, because greed does its finest work dressed as prudence and fear does its finest work dressed as discipline. The farmstead has its own story to tell, read in sign, in what was left and what was not. And what the camp's best tracker reads at the cache site goes quietly into the ledger of things this county will not explain. Then comes the freight. A cache is worth what you can move and protect and nothing else, and the carry turns treasure into a logistics problem with rifles on it, a night column strung out between the find and home with half the camp's future strapped to its backs. That is the exact moment the county picks to end its silence.

The service station has no roof on the pump island anymore, and there is somebody lying inside it who is still breathing. The Smith family came up on the place from the west road with thirty rounds between them, nothing to eat, a dog on a litter, and their names already in a book they left behind at the river. They were looking for water and a wall. What they found was a wounded stranger on the floor and a sheet of paper she would not let go of until somebody promised her something. The paper is a map. Hand-drawn, marked in a hurry, streaked with the blood of the person who carried it. It shows a way west around the controlled roads the family has been paying to use since Camp Ridge fell. It is the first good news anybody has handed them in weeks, and nobody in this county hands a family good news for free. Mark makes the promise. The map changes hands. And Emily, twelve years old with a survey book in her coat, reads the ink the way she once read crows over a ridge, and finds something on it that nobody meant her to find. A map can save your life, or lead you exactly where somebody wants you to end up. This week the family has to decide which one it is holding, with the light going and nobody left to ask. The pencil has stopped on the page, and thirty people are standing in the cold to watch what happens next. The Smith family made it across the river. That was supposed to be the hard part. Now they are inside the River Wardens' settlement, under a barn lantern, in front of a table with an open book on it, and the man behind the book has just heard their name and looked up at Jonah Pike instead of writing it down. Two Wardens stand a step from Jake. The rifles are not slung anymore. There is a price for crossing this river, and it turns out the price was never the water. The Wardens take the guns and the ammunition. Then they want more than that. They want the family to stand in front of their people and do as they are told, and they want everything about them written down. Who they are. What they can do. Whether anybody is looking for them. Mark Smith has watched a camp perform blindness for a rifle, and he knows a thing done for show when he is standing in one. He pays with performance, not pride. Jake wants to push the table. Sarah is looking at the book, and she has seen a book laid out that way before. What the family gives up to get through the test, and what the book is really for, is the whole of this episode.Remnant drops Saturdays and Sundays at 1200pm ET for paying subscribers — seven hours before the public feed. The road west runs out at a river that has come up over its banks, and there are men on the far side of it with rifles. Not a mob and not the county. Men with posts and rules and a line drawn across the only way through, standing on it like people who own the ground. The Smith family came down the abandoned county road expecting a washed-out bridge and empty country. What they find is the first organized thing they have met since the walls came down, and it is not offering help. Season Two of Survival Dispatch Remnant opens here. Camp Ridge is behind them and burning. The country ahead does not belong to them. A river in flood is a wall with one door in it, and the men at that door have decided the water is theirs and the crossing has a price. Mark Smith has a family, a few rifles, and supplies that will not last a long argument. The men across the water have time. Talk, and give up something the family cannot spare. Bluff, and bet his children on strangers. Turn back, and walk away from the only road west. Every door is bad, and somebody is going to set a price for that crossing before the water goes down.
