A king finally at peace. A palace of imported cedar. And a quiet, restless thought that would not leave him alone. Tonight we travel three thousand years back to Jerusalem, to the evening King David looked out from his cedar palace, saw the Ark of the Covenant still resting inside a tent of goat hair, and decided to build God a house worthy of His presence. His heart was right. His fortune was sufficient. His prophet approved. And the answer was no. This is the story of the Davidic Covenant — of a good man told he could not do a good thing, of the promise God gave him instead, and of what David did with the rest of his life once he understood the work would be finished by someone else. He spent his final years gathering gold, stone, cedar and craftsmen for a Temple he would never walk into, and handed the plans to his son with four words that have echoed ever since: be strong and courageous.

There, a desperate mother, an outsider with no claim on Israel’s promises, goes searching for Jesus.
