How to attack (and defend) a medieval castle - Connor C. Wilson

TED-Ed

Summary

The siege of Carlisle Castle in 1315 by Scotland's King Robert the Bruce highlights the challenges faced by medieval armies. Despite initial expectations of a quick victory, adverse weather conditions and strategic defenses led to a retreat after just 11 days. This event underscores the resilience of castles, which served not only as defensive structures but also as symbols of power and governance.

Castles began to emerge in Europe during the late 9th century as the Carolingian Empire fragmented. Nobles constructed these fortifications to assert regional control, evolving from simple wooden designs to more complex stone structures by the 12th century. The architectural advancements included decorative elements and enhanced defensive features, reflecting both military needs and the desire to project authority.

However, as military technology advanced, particularly with the introduction of gunpowder, the effectiveness of castles diminished. By the 15th century, powerful cannons rendered traditional castle designs vulnerable, leading to a shift in their purpose. Many castles were repurposed as residences or administrative centers, and today they serve as historical attractions, continuing to symbolize the grandeur of their past.
