737: Jess Steere - Building a Pipe-Smoking Community. Part V, Three Coin Cuts Conclusion.
The Pipes Magazine Radio Show PodcastSummary
Brian Levine hosts a discussion on the nuances of pipe tobacco, focusing on three specific blends: Escudo, Peterson, and Davidoff Flake Medallions. He compares their characteristics and pricing, noting that while all three are Virginia Perique blends, the Davidoff version stands out due to its inclusion of Black Cavendish. Levine speculates on the historical origins of coin-shaped tobaccos and highlights the price discrepancies among the brands, attributing them to different marketing strategies and production costs.
The episode also features Jess Steer, who shares his experience in establishing a pipe club within a campus ministry. Steer discusses how he engages college students in pipe smoking, emphasizing the importance of creating a supportive community for young adults navigating their faith and personal challenges. He provides insights into how he introduces new smokers to the hobby, including practical tips on selecting pipes and tobaccos, and fostering discussions around literature and philosophy during meetings. The conversation underscores the social and therapeutic aspects of pipe smoking, particularly for men seeking connection in a supportive environment.
Show Notes
Tonight on The Pipes Magazine Radio Show, we welcome back Jess Steere, who first joined us more than five years ago, when he was celebrating his first five years as a pipe smoker. Now marking his tenth anniversary in the hobby, Jess returns to share how he has helped build a local pipe-smoking community that brings together college students and other men who might never have discovered fellow pipe smokers in their area.
Jess explains how casual conversations about pipes led to gatherings centered on good tobacco, shared interests, and camaraderie. He discusses how he introduces newcomers to the hobby, helps them choose pipes and tobacco, and encourages others to start clubs of their own - even if they don't know another pipe smoker nearby. Drawing on his experience in campus ministry, Jess also reflects on the importance of friendship, mentorship, and creating opportunities for people to connect. He's even willing to coach anyone interested in starting a club of their own.
At the top of the show, Brian presents Part Five - the conclusion of his series comparing three coin-cut tobaccos: Escudo, Peterson’s Deluxe Navy Rolls, and Davidoff Flake Medallions.
