Your client probably will not remember whether you used GROW, a strengths-based framework, an NLP process or a particular coaching technique. They will remember whether they felt seen. Whether something shifted. Whether they left the conversation able to think, feel or act differently. In this episode of The Mindset Coach Podcast, I explore what coaching mastery actually looks like once you have moved beyond the foundations. We look at four areas that become increasingly important as your coaching develops: presence, precision in language, transformational range and professional maturity, as well as why more experience alone does not necessarily make us better coaches if we are not reflecting, receiving feedback, and deliberately refining the way we work. Because mastery is not about collecting more certificates or proving how many techniques you know. It is about developing the judgement to recognise what this client needs, in this moment, and having both the capability and restraint to respond appropriately.
Do you really need to wait until you have 500 coaching hours before you begin developing towards PCC-level coaching? Or could waiting actually mean spending hundreds of hours practising at the level you already know, rather than developing the skills you want to grow into? In this episode of The Mindset Coach Podcast, I’m joined by Andy Johnson, our Director of Education at the Mindset Coach Academy, for a conversation about what really changes as coaches move from ACC towards PCC. We explore the shift from coaching the “what” to coaching the “who”, why greater depth often requires us to loosen our grip on frameworks, and how presence, intuition, curiosity and the ability to stay comfortable in the unknown all develop through practice. We also tackle the question so many coaches ask themselves: “Am I ready for PCC?” Because PCC development is not simply about accumulating coaching hours or adding another credential to your LinkedIn profile. It is about becoming increasingly responsive, present and skilful in the room, and developing those capabilities while you are coaching, not after the work is already done. Being good at marketing coaching and being good at coaching are not the same skill. A polished brand, a large following, a full event or a beautifully marketed programme can tell us a lot about somebody’s ability to attract attention and sell an offer. But once a client actually steps into the coaching room, whether that is one-to-one, inside a group programme or at a retreat, something very different is required. Can you listen beyond the presenting problem? Can you stay in partnership rather than jumping in with your own answers? Can you recognise where coaching ends and mentoring, consulting or therapy begins? In this episode of The Mindset Coach Podcast, let’s explore why coaching needs to be treated as a skilled profession. What credentialing can and cannot tell us about a coach, and why developing genuine capability matters just as much as building visibility. Because getting somebody into your coaching container is only the beginning. What happens once they trust you enough to step inside is where the real responsibility starts.
There is a point in many coaches’ development where good questions, strong rapport and a reliable coaching framework are no longer enough. You can hear the pattern beneath what the client is saying. You know they are stuck somewhere deeper. And you also know that asking another variation of “What could you do differently?” is probably not going to create the shift they need. In this episode of The Mindset Coach Podcast, I explore what advanced coaching skills training should actually develop, from deeper listening and pattern recognition to intervention flexibility, ethical maturity and the confidence to respond to the client in front of you rather than hiding behind a model. We also look at what to consider when choosing advanced training, why live practice and feedback matter so much, and where accreditation, mentoring and professional community fit into your development. Because advanced development is not about collecting more certificates or filling your toolkit with techniques. It is about becoming a coach with better judgement, greater range and the ability to create deeper change while knowing exactly where the boundaries of responsible coaching sit. Putting more people into a coaching session does not automatically make it group coaching. And if you have ever been inside a group where one person dominated every conversation, quieter members disappeared into the background, and the whole thing felt more like a webinar with occasional hot seats, you will know exactly what I mean. In this episode of The Mindset Coach Podcast, I explore what actually makes group coaching different from one-to-one coaching, and why successful group experiences require a distinct set of design and facilitation skills. We look at group dynamics, participation, psychological safety, accountability, confidentiality, programme structure and why the group itself can become one of the most powerful sources of transformation. If you are considering creating a group programme, mastermind, retreat or membership, this episode will help you think beyond “How do I get more people into the room?” and start asking a much more useful question: How do I create an experience where those people genuinely learn, participate, change and grow together?
