Heavy Metal Tones

Show Notes

Heavy Metal Tones – Episode 300: A Halloween Special! Three hundred episodes of Heavy Metal Tones! What better way to celebrate this milestone than with a special Halloween edition? This week I sit down with Sarah from Australian black metal outfit Antagonizor to talk about the band's new music, her experiences growing up under a strict Christian upbringing, and how those experiences have shaped her relationship with Halloween and the darker side of life. We also get into how Sarah and the band celebrate this most wonderfully wicked time of year. CONTENT WARNING: This episode includes discussion of strict religious upbringing, religious experiences and potentially distressing personal subject matter. Some listeners may find parts of this conversation upsetting. Listener discretion is advised. And as a very special Halloween treat, I've got something exclusive for you: Infernal Blasphemer – "Baphomet". This track is only available here online, making this episode its exclusive home. Check out Infernal Blasphemer on Bandcamp: https://infernalblasphemer.bandcamp.com/ Three hundred episodes, a Halloween celebration, a fascinating conversation and a little infernal blasphemy to finish things off. Heavy Metal Tones – Episode 299: Two Titans of Metal This week on Heavy Metal Tones, it's a double header featuring two titans of their art and their medium: Johan Längqvist of Candlemass and Troy Sanders of Mastodon! From the crushing, doom-laden foundations of Candlemass to the progressive, boundary-pushing heaviness of Mastodon, this episode brings together two very different forces in heavy music. Johan Längqvist is a distinctive voice in the legacy of doom metal, while Troy Sanders has helped drive Mastodon's evolution through sludge, progressive metal and beyond. Two artists, two unique perspectives, and two conversations with musicians who have carved out their own places in the history of heavy music. We're getting beyond the riffs and records to hear from the people behind the music, exploring the artistry, the stories and the creative journeys that make these bands such enduring forces. TWO TITANS. TWO CONVERSATIONS. ONE HELL OF A DOUBLE HEADER! Crank it up and join me for Episode 299 of Heavy Metal Tones! Heavy Metal Tones – Episode 297 Cronos, Venom’s Black Metal & Antagonizör The tribute to Cronos continues on Heavy Metal Tones, and this week we turn our attention to what many consider his pinnacle with Venom: the legendary Black Metal. Following last episode’s homage to the man behind the voice, bass and attitude that helped change the face of heavy music, it’s time to revisit the record that gave an entire genre its name. Raw, aggressive and unapologetic, Black Metalremains a landmark in extreme music, and Cronos’ legacy is written all over it. But we’re not stopping there. As a special halftime music break, we crank up Antagonizör and their brilliant track Obsessed By Evil — a filthy, old-school, Venom-inspired blast of metalpunk that carries that same rebellious spirit into the underground today. Two generations of evil, one unmistakable influence. Crank it up, raise a glass to Cronos, and join me for Episode 297 of Heavy Metal Tones. Some Audio issues in this Ep sorry I have tried to fix it

Heavy Metal Tones – Episode 296: A Farewell to Cronos This is a sad one. Before we revisit the past, I pay tribute to Cronos — Conrad Lant, the voice, force and driving spirit behind Venom, and one of the figures who helped shape the sound and attitude of extreme metal. I take a moment to remember Cronos and reflect on his enormous impact before revisiting Episode 133 from November 2023, where I took a deep dive into Welcome to Hell. An album that changed the rules, challenged everything that came before it, and helped lay the foundations for black metal, death metal and the extreme metal world that followed. This isn’t just a revisit of an old episode. It’s a look back at a record that still sounds dangerous, raw and utterly uncompromising — and a chance to remember the man behind it. Raise the volume. Remember Cronos. Remember Venom. Rest in power, Cronos. 🤘 Sign up at Patreon.com/heavymetaltones to help support the show for just $2 a month this will help keep the lights on and the mic humming Hosted on Acast. TRIVAN & HKSPK — TWO FACES OF THE EUROPEAN UNDERGROUND Episode 295 is a double header that takes Heavy Metal Tones deep into two very different corners of the European black metal underground. First up, TRIVAN from Croatia — esoteric, philosophical and steeped in an atmosphere that feels almost ancient. Their music is built around darkness, introspection, spiritual resistance and the search for something deeper beneath the surface. Then we head to Germany for HKSPK, whose black/death metal takes a much more introspective and contemporary path. Their music feels rooted in lived experience, loss, conflict and the world around them — raw, direct and very much of the present. Two bands. Two countries. Two very different approaches to extreme metal. One feels ancient. The other feels new. One looks beyond the world. The other looks directly into it. And to make this episode even more special, I've got TWO EXCLUSIVE TRACKS — one from each of these European underground bands. This is Heavy Metal Tones at its best: digging beneath the surface, finding music that deserves to be heard, and bringing it directly to you.
