Rebellious Creation - Boann and the River Boyne

Irish Mythology Podcast

Show Notes

On this episode we’re going to be talking about the acts of defiance by divine femine figures that lead to the creation of rivers, hills, mountains and valleys. Medieval and modern literature has created a pantheon of old Irish gods but we don’t really know how widespread worship of individual deities was. Some seem intimately tied to place, and may not have been particularly well known beyond their locale. One such individual is the goddess Boann, who gives her name to the river Boyne which runs from near the village of Carberry in Co. Kildare, through Co. Meath to the sea at Baltray Co. Louth. Written, produced and presented by Marcas Ó hUiscín and Stephanie Ní Thiarnaigh. Íth, Míl and their crew have set sail for the island from Íth’s vision but the sea and the gods who govern it have other ideas. Before they reach their destination they must weather a deadly storm, and even then, the island beyond the waves is not exactly welcoming. We talk about the euhemerising and re-enchanting myth, the archaeology and genetics of Neolithic and early Bronze Age Ireland, the Dingle Peninsula, Peig, languages of Ireland, and the stray sod . credits Written, presented and produced by Marcas Ó hUiscín and Stephanie Ní Thiarnaigh.
