More from Shipwrecks and Sea Dogs
This edition of This Week in Shipwrecks includes archaeologists changing direction about the Nantucket shipwreck, the search for Amelia Earhart’s plane, continuing trouble in the Strait of Hormuz, and SUNY Maritime’s training ship, Empire State VII, and more.
On 14 January 1993, the Polish ferry MV Jan Heweliusz capsized in a hurricane-force Baltic storm off Cape Arkona, Germany. Fifty-five people died and only nine crew members survived. It remains Poland’s deadliest peacetime maritime disaster.
This week in Shipwrecks features the possible discovery of the oldest known shipwreck, a ring depciting the Lighthouse of Alexandria, a deadly shipwreck of migrants off the coast of Djibouti, commercial shipping turmoil in the Black Sea and the Strait of Hormuz, images of the steam-yacht Ituna, and a 2300 yeard old shipwreck found at Vis in Croatia.
Charles Lightoller was the most senior officer to survive the sinking of the Titanic, and his story did not end in the North Atlantic. In this episode, we follow Titanic’s Second Officer from the bridge on the night of April 14, 1912, to the beaches of Dunkirk nearly three decades later.
This week's roundup spans a war reaching the Black Sea, a fishing vessel run aground beneath a Scottish sea stack, and a 2,100-year-old shipwreck that gave up its cargo almost untouched. Host Rich Napolitano covers seven stories in sourced, fact-checked detail, from active maritime disasters to historic wrecks and the ongoing fight to save a Falklands-era frigate from the scrapyard.
