The Resident Evil Podcast

Show Notes

On REP's 12th anniversary, we begin to celebrate 20 years of the Resident Evil Outbreak sub series that was first released in December 2003 in Japan. The game, which started off life advertised as Network Biohazard or Resident Evil Online quickly stoked the imagination of RE fans across the world, especially those that had bet on the franchise remaining on Sony's console post PSX. There was a lot of hope and expectation that Resident Evil going online would revolutionise the series. What transpired was not quite what was promised in the early trailers with many lamenting the lack of internet infrastructure for the PS2. Fast-forward 20 years and both Outbreak File 1 and 2 have a dedicated fandom, with clever minds keeping PC servers alive so these games can be played as they were always intended. In the first of our year-long celebration, we will be applying our usual Happy Birthday playthrough standard to the Outbreak and Hellfire scenarios. The first of course acts as an extended tutorial, but throws players in at the deep end. Hellfire meanwhile chronologically at least takes place at the same time, but players face the dreaded Lickers in the Apple Inn.The team have therefore either fired up their PS2s (waited an eternity whilst it loads) or headed online to bring you our experiences of these chapters. Expect some contrasting views with a detailed look at the tank controls, graphics and mechanics and the hidden lore.

The third entry into our RECollection series see's the team take a nostalgic look back at the final entry into the mainline classic trilogy that came out on the PlayStation 1. Perhaps more so than any of the others PSX entries, the original RE3 is notably different from its recent remake and for that reason many lament some of the legendary locations absent from the 2020 revision. As with this mini-cast, we recount our stories of acquisition and the sheer terror the Nemesis brought to the table!

Time to strap in as the podcast team reconvene to discuss the latest live-action film adaptation, this time with renowned horror writer-director Zach Cregger of Barbarian and Weapons fame taking the reins. As well as discussing in-depth everything we liked and didn't like, we address the controversies about the canon and lack of connections, why Cregger decided to go in this direction, the critical reception financial success, and just how his gamble seems to have paid off. We also have call-ins and opinions from the community and touch on the ongoing Biohazard 30th anniversary celebrations. There is also some burning Survival Unit news. Please enjoy.

Our 30th anniversary celebrations continues with a mini-cast featuring the all time classic - Resident Evil 2. Now heralded as one of the best survival horror games ever made, upon release not everyone on REP was quite on board with the series at this point and indeed for some, would come much later. We now recollect our memories of first entering into the RPD, the intertwining narrative and admiring the sheer balls of Capcom to make something so grand, so new that took everything from the first game and improving upon it without relying on the same characters - in other words making a complete sequel. Neptune's Killer Question also returns to round out this mini-cast special.

Way back in 2006, Capcom released Resident Evil Deadly Silence, a port of the original 1996 classic to celebrate 10 years of the franchise. Of course, Deadly Silence would also include the REbirth mode - a new way to play through the Spencer Mansion taking full advantage of the DS's hardware/gimmicks depending on your point of view! 20 years on STARS TyranT, Rombie and Neptune revisit this quirky (and now quite expensive) title to see how it holds up and celebrate all the new additions that make this title so unique. Yes, this is of course another excuse to discuss the OG game, and why not as we enter the 30th anniversary year, but rest assured all the touchscreen puzzles are assessed and memories of blowing into the rotting corpse of Richard are shared fondly! In the news we take a look at the new trailer for the Resident Evil film by Zach Cregger, and finish off with an RE DS themed quiz.
