The BEST format to start Warhammer the Old World!? | Battle March Arcane Journal Masterclass
Square Based: A Warhammer Fantasy in the Old WorldShow Notes
Arcane Journal: Battle March is the best way to start playing Warhammer The Old World. But don't be fooled—while this is a small format game it is by no means stripped back. It's packed with detail, narrative flavor, and crunchy mechanics. If you are a "hobby butterfly" who wants to collect multiple factions, or if you're looking to jump into the game without committing to a massive 2,000-point army, this is exactly what you need. In this video, we're breaking down: The Lore Update: Setting the stage in 2275-2276, including Settra's forever war, Frydaal's invasion of the Empire, and Grand Cathay arriving to hold the line. Army Construction: How to build your list with new Battle March restrictions. New Magic Items: Exclusive items for small-format games. Objectives & Scoring: How to win games using Dead or Fled, Treasure Troves (40mm bases), Strategic Landmarks (100mm bases), and everyone's favorite—Baggage Carts! Random Happenings: We look at the insane new D6 tables for Disruptive Weather (Lightning strikes!), Wilderness Terrain (Watch out for the Troll's Lair), and the Chaos of War. Plus, we talk about the featured army lists from the core box and Arcane Journals, and what this means for the future of our Renegade / Legacy faction lists! Is the great Warhammer Schism finally coming to an end? For years, the divide between the Main Studio (AoS/40k) and the Specialist Design Studio (Old World/Heresy) banished half our favorite factions to "Legacy" status. But with Horus Heresy suddenly announcing official cross-compatibility with 40k Custodes AND Age of Sigmar Daemons, the wall seems to be coming down! We speculate on what this means for the upcoming Arcane Journals, the "Gargantuan Treeman," the Barrow Legion, and whether we will finally see AoS models officially supported in the Old World. 0:00 - Intro & The New Tomb Kings Reveal2:41 - Are Skeleton Horses Actually Cool?5:31 - The Detail on the New Tomb Guard Kits10:40 - Val's $1,500 Gaming Mat Tariff Nightmare14:35 - Rob's Insane Doubles Tournament Rules20:34 - Event Talk: 1-Day vs 2-Day Tournaments26:03 - What is "The Schism" in Games Workshop?33:45 - Is The Schism Finally Ending?41:44 - Horus Heresy & Age of Sigmar Cross-Compatibility48:09 - Barrow Legions, Treemen & The Future of Legacy Armies54:09 - Outro & SBOT Tickets MENTIONED IN THIS VIDEO: ► *Links to all current Renegade Drafts*https://docs.google.com/document/d/16kAE-p_CWbsH0XatDPuRao6TngSw-KSweUnJa81kOXE/edit?usp=sharing ► *Rob's Old World EVENTS in Nottingham!* https://tsnarena.com/events/category/the-old-world/ ► *Check out Rob's Event Recaps here!*https://thehonestwargamer.com/ ► Support us on *PATREON* and join us on Discord: https://www.patreon.com/Squarebased *OLD WORLD RESOURCES* ► *Square Based Comp AND Tournament Packs* https://thehonestwargamer.com/warhammer-the-old-world/square-based-comp/ ► *The Square Based FAQ:* https://www.squarebased.com/faqs ► *The Renegade Legacy Pack:* https://www.squarebased.com/ ► *Our 500pt Foray Pack:* https://thehonestwargamer.com/warhammer-the-old-world-500-point-foray/ ► *Old World Army Builder:* https://old-world-builder.com/ ► *Old World Rules Wiki:* https://tow.whfb.app/ ► *Old World Rankings (Past and Upcoming Old World Events:* https://oldworldrankings.com/*MERCH* https://thehonestwargamer.com/product-category/square-based/ Youtube Music Playlist for Audio Only: https://tinyurl.com/SB-YouTube-Music-Playlist Podcast on all other Platforms: https://squarebasedpodcast.podbean.com/ #squarebased #warhammertheoldworld #warhammerfantasy

Rob and Val are back in action, and today we are breaking down the Pros and Cons of EVERY single army in the game! Looking for the best army for starting Warhammer: The Old World, or wondering how your favorite Core and Legacy factions stack up? Whether you're deciding between shiny new plastics for Grand Cathay or throwing down with Renegade armies like Skaven and Vampire Counts, this is the ultimate tabletop wargaming faction guide for you. If you are looking to start a brand new army in 2026, trying to figure out which faction fits your tabletop playstyle, or you just want to listen to Val ruthlessly dunk on the Empire and Dwarfs for three hours, this is the episode for you. We are weighing all Core and Legacy (Renegade) factions looking at: The Models & Hobby Threshold: How hard is it to actually get this army painted and on the tabletop? Are the sculpts elite, or are you going to be painting a hundred tired, shoeless state troops? Phase Effectiveness: Does the army actually play the game across the Movement, Magic, Shooting, and Combat phases, or are you just skipping half your turn? Stability & Psychology: How well does the army handle panic and terror? The "Hero Hammer" Dependency: Can your faction function without a Lord on a Dragon hard-carrying your entire list? Core Tax & Armies of Infamy: Are you forced into bringing bad units, and do you actually have fun, thematic lists to build around?
