The Couple Who Built a Life Around Fishing | Frank & Jane (Beyond the Coast)

🎣 Get the Net – Tight Lines, Loose Lips! 🎙️

Show Notes

Frank and Jane are the couple behind Beyond the Coast, a YouTube channel built around fishing, camping and exploring their own backyard. They've turned that into a lifestyle a lot of us would love to have.

Frank grew up on the Coromandel and started fishing at about five years old alongside his mum Julie, a well-known rock-fishing legend in the area. His stepdad, still a great fisherman today, was big into straylining, so Frank spent his childhood baiting and burleying off the rocks and out on the boat. A move to Australia and city life took him away from fishing for a while. Jane grew up on Sydney's Northern Beaches with a beach and surfing background rather than a fishing one. When the pair moved back to New Zealand about seven years ago and settled on the coast, Frank got straight back into it, and he picked up the soft-bait rods too.

The content side started almost by accident. They'd planned to launch a channel together, but Covid hit. Jane is a nurse by trade and was working as an essential worker, while Frank, a self-employed builder and joiner, couldn't work. So Frank started his own channel solo, editing full-length videos on his phone. Once Jane could ease off work a few years later, they finally launched Beyond the Coast together. Neither of them comes from a tech, filming or editing background. Everything they know, they learned on YouTube.

Recorded live at the NZ Boat Fish Dive Expo as part of the Daiwa Quick Casts, this one covers:

• Frank's land-based method for big snapper: Google Maps scouting, swirly dirty days, homemade burley minced in a garden shredder, and big fresh baits

•Their rock gear: Daiwa Freeswimmers, 40lb braid, a single 6/0 hook and no weight

•Upgrading from a 4.95 to a 5.1m boat, and how it's changed their shallow-water snapper fishing in 3m of water

•A tribute to Frank's late mum Julie, whose 18lb snapper landed her on the front cover of a fishing mag

•Jane's honest advice for anyone wanting to start a fishing YouTube channel

•The Samoa trip where their gear never made it onto the plane, and Frank's solo return mission chasing GTs

Thanks to Daiwa NZ for making the Quick Casts happen.

In Japan, jig anglers have an unofficial benchmark. It isn’t a club with a membership card. It’s a bluefin tuna over 100 kilos, caught on the jig. You can’t plan for one or buy your way into it. You just keep dropping. Justin Corric had chased that fish for years. A little over four weeks ago, on the final morning of one of the toughest trips of his life, he finally got one.

Captain Rick Pollock grew up in Hollywood, the son of a doctor whose patients included movie stars, and had boated 100 billfish out of Baja Mexico by the time he was 18. He arrived in New Zealand in 1978 on what was meant to be a one-year contract skippering a charter boat out of Whakatane, fishing White Island — and never left. Rick sits down with Nick to share stories from nearly 50 years on the water, including White Island — his home away from home — plus the day his boat tied the All Tackle world record kingfish, and a career built almost entirely around the country's most obsessed-over sportfish.
