Show Notes

What does good welfare really look like for bears and other non-human animals living in zoos—and how can we measure it in meaningful, practical ways? In this episode, we’re joined by Dr. Anna Fourage, animal welfare expert, to explore the development of welfare assessment tools for captive bears, with a special focus on zoos across Asia and Thailand. She is the operation manager and trustee at "For Tigers", holds an MSc in International Animal Welfare, Ethics, and Law from the University of Edinburgh, and just finished her PhD in anthropology researching the role of zoos in Thailand. Anna shares key insights from recent research on creating a composite welfare assessment tool for hibernatory bears, unpacking its major findings, strengths, and current limitations. We dive into the reliability of keeper ratings as welfare indicators across different institutions, discussing the real challenges of intra- and inter-rater consistency. Together, we explore which behavioural, physiological, and environmental indicators are currently the most valid for assessing bear welfare. Beyond the science, this conversation tackles the practical and ethical realities of zoo welfare. How can welfare tools be designed to be both scientifically robust and realistically usable, especially in resource-limited settings? What are the biggest barriers facing Thai zoos in improving welfare standards? We also broaden the lens to the global ethical challenges of keeping large mammals in captivity, discussing the evolving mission of modern zoos—balancing conservation, education, and animal welfare—and how visitors can be meaningfully engaged in that mission. An essential listen for anyone interested in animal welfare science, zoo ethics, conservation, andthe future of captive wildlife care. Dive deeper...

Was passiert eigentlich genau im Schlachthof?

Today we are exchanging thoughts with the International Veterinary Students´ Association (IVSA) about the meaning and implementation of animal welfare in veterinary education around the globe. To gain international insights, we were able to speak with five regional representatives in the following roles: Tamy Negrón (President, Peru), Prothoma Kalidaha (Chair of Standing Committee on Animal Welfare, India), Asampana Kofi Engbme Maxwell (External Relations Manager, Ghana), Felix Metzger (IVSA Trust, Germany), and Monia El Madidi (Research and Data Analyst, Morocco) (at the time of interview recording in the first half of 2026). In this first of several episodes, we introduce ourselves and learn more about the IVSA with its opportunities and ways to get involved. To lay the foundation for deeper conversations, we also discuss what animal welfare means to each of us. Listen in and get to know the IVSA – maybe you want to get active yourself, join a present chamber, or start one at your university to give yourself and your fellow students a voice for curriculum optimization, compliance with animal welfare, and the future of the veterinary profession.

Leinen los, wir reden über den Hundeführerschein! Aber was genau steckt eigentlich dahinter? Also: Pfote aufs Pedal und los geht’s!

Fish are the most numerous animals farmed for food—yet their welfare is often overlooked. In this episode we are joined by Wasseem Emam, Founder and Director of Ethical Seafood Research, an applied researchorganisation dedicated to improving the welfare of animals in aquatic food systems, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Together, we explore what animal welfare means beneath the water's surface, why fish deserve greater attention in welfare discussions, and how research can help improve aquaculturepractices around the world. From species-specific needs and welfare assessment to the ethical questions surrounding seafood production, this episode highlights both the challenges and the opportunities for creating more compassionate aquatic food systems. Can seafood ever truly be ethical? Tune in as we dive into one of the most overlooked areas of animal welfare.
