Team CPNZ - Endurance Sports PodcastShow Notes
COMMUNITY CONNECT PODCAST | BACKROAD ’26 What a ride. What a weekend. What a crew.Backroad ’26 is officially wrapped , and what an unforgettable three days it was. 23 cyclists.300+ kilometres of riding. Tekapo → Ohau → Kurow → Hakataramea Pass → back to Tekapo. And somehow… not a single flat tyre across the entire trip (and just ONE mechanical!).
We were treated to near-perfect conditions, big skies, stunning landscapes, and (mostly) kind winds. The kind of riding that fills your cup.
Day 2 gets an honourable mention… honestly felt like three days packed into one. Starting beside the breathtaking Lake Ohau, with Aoraki / Mt Cook making a special guest appearance at breakfast , we went straight to work. A steady climb straight out the gate, but the kind you want to do, with views stretching back across the basin to Ben Ohau. From there, it just kept delivering. Epic chunky descents through golden tussock. Rolling into Quailburn Road with pacelines flying and smiles everywhere. A few detours to the Clay Cliffs. Others making a beeline for the Wrinkly Rams for a well-earned early lunch. And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better… the Sailors Cutting climb. Stops, photos, deep breaths, soaking it all in. Truly magnificent. Then the drop down to the dam wall, lunch number two (of course), and a gritty push along Aviemore into a headwind that just wouldn’t quit. One last sharp climb with 5km to go… and then rolling into Kurow, straight to the Waitaki Hotel for a cold one, perfectly timed for the Warriors kickoff.
Moments like these are what it’s all about.
A massive thank you to our incredible supporters who loaded up the swag bags (a definite trip highlight!): PURE NUTRITION EM’S & OSM THAT’S ITS QUIRT CYCLING You helped every kilometre, thank you.
In this episode, we also sit down with TEAMCPNZ Coach Amanda, sharing her coaching insights.
Most importantly, to the crew. The laughs, the grit, the support, the shared experience… that’s what makes Backroad so special. We’re diving deeper into all the stories, laughs, and behind-the-scenes moments on the latest Community Connect Podcast episode. And yes… planning for Backroad ’27 is already underway. Trust us — it’s going to be a cracker.

The Finish line of the 2026 Crater Rim Ultra. What a fantastic place to spend a few hours cheering runners over the finish lining. This is a collection of some of the stories from the trails over many of the events, from those at the pointy end to those looking to complete it.
Just a couple of weeks ago James Kay competed in the 70.3 World Triathlon Championships in Nice - a 1.9km swim in the sea, a 90km bike via Col de Vence (roughly 9.7 km averaging 6.6%), and finishing with a flat half marathon in the heat down the Nice Promenade. Following a solid winter training block, James was keen to test himself against the world's best. This is James's story of how his race went, his highlights and the learnings that he will take forward on his Triathlon journey.
Kathmandu Coast to Coast Podcast is Back – Season 8 powered by TeamCPNZ! We kick off the show with an essential training fundamental: a deep dive into exercise physiology. How hard should you be training and why for specific sessions over the course of your week and your build up to race day. To dial this in we need to have a good understanding of the training zones and how your body is creating energy to fuel our movement at each level. We break down Lactate Threshold and Zone 2 training, explaining how building your aerobic base and anaerobic threshold directly impacts performance and endurance on a course as demanding as the Coast to Coast.
Today we catch up with TeamCPNZ Athlete Darrin Bull who recently completed the Sydney Marathon. He had a great build up in which he completed his training throughout the course of winter only to get sick a couple of weeks out from race day. Following his doctor's clearance he stood on the start line with 41, 000 other marathoners to run the streets of Sydney. Darrin shares his story of his day, the learnings, and what it was like to cross that finish line.
In this episode we catch up with Letecia Hughes who has an incredible story to tell, which is one of adventure, pushing the limits and choosing what is important in life. I have worked with Leticia for a number of years and she has recently come back on board after a couple of years away sailing in the Pacific Islands. In this podcast Leticia shares her story of what that was like to up sticks and go and live on a boat in the tropics cruising amongst the islands. It all sounds pretty idyllic. But It was on the way home from the islands 300NM north of Cape Reinga when they had to make the call to abandon ship with nothing more than the clothes that they were wearing.
