Alpine 100: How a £5 Lottery Supports Britain’s Ski Stars

The CarveCast - Ski Podcast

Show Notes

CarveCast Episode 24 welcomes Scott Dobson, trustee of the Alpine 100 Trust — a charity supporting British winter sports athletes through financial grants for equipment, training and travel. We break down how the grant system works, how athletes can apply, why funding is such a serious barrier in ski racing, and how the UK ski pathway runs from plastic dry slopes through to elite performance levels.

The Alpine 100 Trust runs through a monthly lottery. Five pounds per ticket. Members can buy as many as they like. At the end of each month the prize pot is split across four winners while the remaining fifty percent goes directly into athlete support grants. Once an athlete has been a member for six months they can apply for help with ski gear, training camps or travel costs. For many this is one of the only reliable ways to secure funding while progressing through the expensive world of ski racing.

We also explore how race athletes come through the system, how national governing bodies select talent, why academies in Europe cost so much, and how heavily parents often have to self fund. Scott shares decades inside the industry — from racing, coaching, military skiing and repping equipment — giving a rare overview of how skiing has changed and where support is most needed.

We also talk ski equipment evolution, carving skis, the shift from long straight skis, BOA boot systems, retail trends and post covid recovery. If you care about British skiing, athlete development or the future of the sport, this episode is worth your time.

🎿 One chalet. A different ski resort every day. Could this be the ultimate way to ski the French Alps? In Episode 35 of The CarveCast, I’m joined by Jules Heaton, the ski enthusiast behind Chalet Wonderland, to explore why the Tarentaise Valley makes such an exciting base for a ski safari. Jules and her husband set out to build a chalet that would give them access to the skiing they love, with space to bring friends and family together. A pandemic, delayed windows and an over-budget build later, Wonderland became a reality. We talk Val d’Isère, Tignes, Les Arcs, La Plagne, Sainte-Foy and La Rosière — plus skiing across the border to La Thuile in Italy for lunch. From huge linked ski areas to quieter tree-lined slopes, there’s an incredible amount of variety within reach of one base. ⛷️ In this episode:🏔️ Why the Tarentaise is one of my favourite ski regions🏡 The story behind building Chalet Wonderland🇮🇹 Skiing from France to Italy for lunch🌨️ Choosing a resort to suit the weather and your group🎟️ Ski à la Carte and flexible lift passes🍝 Mountain restaurants and eating well on a ski holiday🧘 Women’s ski and Pilates retreats and catered ski safaris☀️ Why the Alps are worth visiting in summer We also look ahead to my December visit, when I’m hoping to explore as much of the area as possible. If you love the idea of getting more variety out of your next ski trip, this conversation will get you counting down to winter. 🏡 Chalet Wonderlandhttps://www.chaletwonderland.comInstagram: @chaletwonderland 📺 Watch this episode on YouTubehttps://youtu.be/7MjtLUgsAHk 🎙️ Listen to The CarveCasthttps://carvecast.podbean.com 🌐 The CarveCast Websitehttps://thecarvecast.com 📸 Instagramhttps://instagram.com/mrthaibox123 🎵 TikTokhttps://tiktok.com/@mrthaibox 📧 [email protected] #carvecast #skiing #skitok #frenchalps #skisafari #tarentaise
