EP.56 Benson and Nadine Hsu West Coast Drifting Legends

The Goodest Cast - Hangout with the Drift Community

Show Notes

Benson and Nadine are two west coast drifting legends. They met through Nissan and S Chassis meetups in Southern California in the late 90’s and continued to learn about car style, and drifting together. They went from tuners to professional drifters and parents. Their wedding was covered in Super Street and featured their S13s which is one of the most iconic car wedding shoots in the US. Benson and Nadine were competitors in the first two years of Formula Drift. Benson shipped his caged street S13 with a stock sr20det, including a t25 turbo to run against race cars at the 2004 season of FD. Nadine drove her s13 in FD as well and is one of the first professional female drifters in the US. They’ve both been featured in a few top tier magazines when car mags were the pinnacle of tuner culture. Nadine was even on the cover of Carboy Magazine. Nadine is a published author and has been fighting for women to be equal in motorsport since she started.

Together they have influenced drifting and car culture for well over two decades. Not to mention their Sileighty Mania Podcast which has some of the most influential people in drifting telling the stories of the origins of US drifting. We’re doing a crossover so check out my episode where they interview me.

Jamo is Drift Team Animal Style’s newest member, his driving style, car style, and presence made that an easy choice. For someone so young to not only be driving but building cars at the level he is there is no excuse other than dedication. We talk about the struggles of trusting the wrong head gasket and SR20DET issues that no one wants to have. Jamo is just getting started but it was great to sit down and hear his story so far. We couldn’t be more excited to see where his story goes.

Reese Marin is the newest Formula Drift judge, but that does not mean he’s new to drifting. Resse has been around drifting for decades. This man lives and breathes the sport, as a driver, as a coach, as a judge, and as a spotter. He is passionate about what makes drifting cool to him and is an advocate for keeping drifting both fun and hardcore.

Jack is another example of the uniquely great people you meet through drifting. He and his team mates from Hit and Run Drift Club really made drifting fun. They created iconic videos with the help of Scott Mitchell that made waves in the drift world. Their stuff really inspired me when I was getting into drifting. It was all just friends having fun and building cool cars to go shred with, rowdy trips to Japan that looked like a dream. It was something to aspire to. They still run their event called Glory Days in Australia, and Jack has been branching out and exploring drifting in a very different way in some unexpected places.

Jimmy Oakes is a Connecticut based car builder, BMXer, and driver. He also hosts a Youtube channel covering all his car builds and trips driving all over the world. Jimmy is also a part of Front Street Drift Team, which is one of the premiere drift teams in the US known for their clean S Chassis builds and aggressive driving style. Over my time getting to know Jimmy it is obvious this man lives and breathes drifting. The level of his chase driving skill shows that and is proof BMX kids pick up drifting quickly.
