Welcome to Social Care

It’s All About Choice

Welcome to Social Care

Show Notes

In this episode, Michael speaks with Sara Livadeas, founder of Social Care Works and a former local authority commissioner.

Drawing on experience from both sides of the system, Sara explains how social care actually works behind the scenes, from funding and assessments to the relationship between councils and care providers.

Together, they explore:

Why fear around social care is so common, and why most services are actually rated good or outstanding. The lasting impact of COVID and media narratives on public trust in care homes. How the local authority assessment and funding process really works under the Care Act. What happens when someone can’t afford their own care, and how councils decide how support is provided. Why “choice” in care homes can sometimes feel limited, particularly for publicly funded placements. The often misunderstood relationship between commissioners (local authorities) and care providers. The biggest myths about the sector, from “profit-driven providers” to “uncaring commissioners.” Why care homes vary so widely in size, design and experience, and why that diversity can actually be a strength.

Sara also offers practical advice for families entering the system for the first time.
