The Star That Shouldn't Exist

Cool Worlds

Summary

Astronomers are delving into the mysteries of Pyszpilski's star, a peculiar AP-type star that exhibits unusual characteristics, including a slow rotation and a bizarre chemical composition. Unlike typical A-type stars, which spin rapidly, Pyszpilski's star rotates at a mere 3.5 kilometers per second, suggesting the presence of a strong magnetic field despite its classification. This anomaly raises questions about the star's formation and behavior, as A-type stars are not expected to possess such magnetic properties.

Further complicating the star's profile is its chemical makeup, which includes an unexpected abundance of radioactive elements like actinium and plutonium—elements that should not exist in significant quantities in stellar atmospheres. The presence of these elements hints at possible nuclear reactions occurring near the star's surface, although the conditions necessary for fusion are not present. Researchers are exploring three main theories to explain these findings: misinterpretation of spectral data, the existence of an "island of stability" for heavy elements, and the controversial idea that advanced civilizations might be deliberately introducing these elements into the star.

The implications of these discoveries could significantly alter our understanding of stellar physics and the processes occurring within stars. As scientists continue to investigate Pyszpilski's star, they aim to confirm the existence of these radioactive elements and explore the possibility of extraterrestrial influences, which could reshape our perspective on the universe and the potential for life beyond Earth.

For billions of years the Sun has been the perpetual, life-giving star in our sky. It's a force of immense power, yet one we take for granted in our every day lives. But like all things, it too must eventually end. Today, we chronicle the future of our home star, its various phases, why this all happens, and the final fate of our Solar System.Written and presented by Prof David Kipping. Edited by Jorge Casas. Astronomers just announced the discovery of seven Earth-sized transiting planets around TRAPPIST-1! Elisabeth Newton, who studies very small stars like TRAPPIST-1, came by the Cool Worlds Lab to tell us about how this star might affect the prospects for life on these potentially habitable worlds.::More about this Video::► Gillon et al. We're looking forward to the new sci-fi film "Arrival", which explores the barriers to communicating with aliens even face to face. Astronomers really are trying to listen for alien communications, mostly using radio receivers but increasingly by looking for optical laser transmissions too. One of our wild ideas here at the Cool Worlds Lab is that optical SETI could try focussing these efforts to physically-motivated special moments in time to dramatically increase the survey efficiency. Prof Kipping pitches this new concept to all you Cool Worlders!::More about this Video::► Kipping & Teachey (2016), "A Cloaking Device for Transiting Planets": https://arxiv.org/abs/1603.08928► Outro music by Taylor Davis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dl9kI1yQKZk::Playlists For Channel::Latest Cool Worlds Videos ► http://bit.ly/NewCoolWorldsCool Worlds Research ► http://bit.ly/CoolWorldsResearchGuest Videos ► http://bit.ly/CoolWorldsGuestsQ&A Videos ► http://bit.ly/CoolWorldsQAScience of TV/Film ► http://bit.ly/ScienceMovies::Follow us::SUBSCRIBE to the channel http://bit.ly/CoolWorldsSubscribeCool Worlds Lab http://coolworlds.astro.columbia.eduTwitter https://twitter.com/david_kippingInstagram https://www.instagram.com/cool.worldsTHANKS FOR WATCHING!! Now and again we make a video that's a bit different from our usual stuff and here's one of them. A fictional narrative that weaves in scientific ideas of deep time and how intelligence might persist, challenging us to imagine what infinite life might truly be like.
