Elections expert on Latino, Black and young voters swinging left

The early voting data for the 2026 midterm elections reveals significant shifts among Hispanic voters, who are increasingly participating in the electoral process. Tom Bonnier, a senior advisor at Target Smart, highlights that Hispanic voters are accounting for a larger share of the early vote compared to previous elections, with notable increases in turnout across various states. This trend is particularly pronounced among younger Hispanic voters, who are showing a preference for Democratic ballots, reversing the swing towards Republicans observed in the 2024 election.

Bonnier also notes similar patterns among other demographic groups, including Black and Asian American voters, who are also turning out in greater numbers than in past elections. This increase in participation is primarily driven by younger voters, challenging historical trends where early voting is dominated by older demographics. The data suggests that these shifts could significantly impact congressional and statewide races, particularly in swing states where voters of color represent a substantial portion of the electorate.

Despite the positive indicators for Democrats, Bonnier cautions that there are still areas of concern. He points out that while Democrats are performing better in early voting compared to previous elections, some states remain too close to call, and the overall political landscape could still shift as Election Day approaches. Predictions for key Senate races show optimism for Democratic candidates, particularly in states like Iowa and Kansas, where early voting trends appear favorable. However, Bonnier emphasizes the unpredictability of elections and the importance of continued engagement as the midterms draw near.
