Dr. Joshua Lyte: Poultry Microbiome & Immunity Connections | Ep. 197

The Poultry Podcast Show

Show Notes

In this episode of The Poultry Podcast Show, Dr. Joshua Lyte, poultry scientist with the USDA ARS, explains how immune selection influences the poultry microbiome, serotonin pathways, and bird physiology. He discusses connections between immunity, host microorganism interactions, gut function, and emerging opportunities for noninvasive monitoring of bird health and performance. Discover how microbiome research may shape the future of poultry production. Listen now on all major platforms!

"Humoral immunity contributes to shaping microorganism populations and functions within the gastrointestinal tract through several interconnected biological mechanisms."

Meet the guest: Dr. Joshua Lyte received his PhD from Iowa State University and completed a U.S. Air Force funded postdoctoral fellowship at the Microbiome Institute at University College Cork in Ireland. He is currently a poultry scientist with the USDA ARS, studying interactions between the avian microbiome, stress physiology, immunity, and disease resistance across poultry species. In this episode of The Poultry Podcast Show, Dr. Valentina Bongiorno, Research Associate at Michigan State University and incoming Assistant Professor of Poultry Behavior and Welfare at Auburn University, discusses how poultry behavior connects welfare, production, and barn management. She explains how video recordings, daily observations, movement patterns, resource use, and housing design can reveal practical insights in commercial laying hen systems. Dr. Bongiorno also shares how small facility adjustments, such as changes in nest curtains, can support both welfare and production. Listen now on all major platforms!
