Nicolle W. Davis and Janice Walker of UF Health on Innovation and Specialized Stroke Care

Becker’s Healthcare Podcast

Summary

The University of Florida Health has launched a groundbreaking Mobile Stroke Treatment Unit (MSTU) program aimed at improving stroke care by delivering advanced medical services directly to patients in the field. This initiative features specialty-equipped ambulances that include portable CT scanners, telemedicine technology, and stroke-specific medications. The MSTUs are fully integrated into local 911 dispatch systems, allowing for rapid response to suspected stroke emergencies, with a multidisciplinary team ready to perform evaluations and initiate treatment on-site.

Dr. Janice Walker and Dr. Nicole Davis, leaders of the program, emphasize the significant challenges they faced in establishing the MSTU, including funding issues and the need for EMS buy-in. Mobile stroke care is not yet recognized as a formal service line by Medicare, which limits billing opportunities. However, the program has demonstrated impressive results, with approximately 62% of patients treated within 90 minutes of symptom onset and a 45% decrease in mortality rates. The MSTU has shown to reduce treatment times significantly, leading to better patient outcomes, including shorter hospital stays and increased chances of being discharged directly home.

Looking ahead, UF Health aims to continue expanding the program while also focusing on community education regarding stroke recognition and the importance of immediate medical response. The overarching goal is to enhance patient outcomes and reduce disability by ensuring that stroke patients receive timely and effective care.
