The trial of Russell Brand commenced at Southwark Crown Court, where he faces seven charges, including three counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault, related to incidents alleged to have occurred between 1999 and 2009. The defense, represented by barrister Ian Winter, challenged the witnesses' recollections and emphasized the theme of consent, arguing that historical text messages indicated ongoing affection rather than trauma. The defense also suggested that the complainants' memories may have been influenced by recent media portrayals of similar cases.
Witnesses responded to the defense's assertions by expressing feelings of shame and fear that prevented them from reporting the incidents sooner. They maintained that their accounts reflect the reality of their experiences and the distress involved in coming forward against a high-profile figure. The trial is set to continue for several weeks as more witnesses are heard before the defense presents its case.
