Birbal’s Porridge: A Story of Wit and Wisdom丨Aesop’s Fables from Every Land

Emperor Akbar expresses concern about the harsh winter affecting productivity in his kingdom. His clever minister, Burble, assures him that workers will do anything to earn money, even standing in a freezing lake overnight for a reward of a hundred gold coins. Burble finds a poor weaver named Sundar, who, despite the cold, is motivated by the promise of gold to endure the challenge without any warmth.

Sundar manages to stay in the lake all night by focusing on a distant lamp's glow, which gives him the illusion of warmth. However, when Emperor Akbar discovers this, he believes Sundar has cheated and refuses to reward him. Burble, determined to help Sundar, concocts a plan involving a pot of porridge that takes an unusually long time to cook, drawing the emperor's curiosity.

Ultimately, Burble reveals that the pot is too high above the fire to cook, just as Sundar relied on the distant lamp for warmth. This clever analogy convinces Emperor Akbar to reward Sundar with the promised gold coins and appoint him as one of his royal weavers, highlighting the themes of perseverance and cleverness in overcoming challenges.
