Show Notes

The Adventures of Philip Marlowe, “The King in Yellow,” originally broadcast on July 8, 1947, is episode 4 of the 1947 NBC summer run. Van Heflin stars as Raymond Chandler’s hard-boiled Los Angeles detective in this adaptation of Chandler’s 1938 short story, written for radio by Milton Geiger.

Asked to step in during a late-night disturbance at the Carlton Hotel on the Sunset Strip, Marlowe finds that trouble surrounding flashy trumpet player King Leopardi may be far more serious than it first appears. Hotel staff, performers, and long-held resentments lead him into a tense nocturnal mystery of secrets and danger.

100 Greatest Old Time Detective Stories presents the original broadcast with a newly produced contextual introduction, a short closing announcement, and gently cleaned/mastered audio for a more consistent listening experience.
