A Boston police officer found dying in the snow. A girlfriend accused of murder. And a criminal investigation that divided America.
On 29 January 2022, John O'Keefe was discovered unresponsive outside a fellow police officer's home in Canton, Massachusetts.
His girlfriend, Karen Read, was accused of striking him with her SUV and leaving him to die in freezing conditions.
But as the investigation unfolded, disturbing questions emerged.
A shattered taillight. Disputed forensic evidence. Controversial messages from a lead investigator. And allegations of a police cover-up.
Was John O'Keefe the victim of a tragic collision, or had investigators got the story terribly wrong?
In this episode of True Crime Now, Erica Voss examines the evidence, the competing theories, two extraordinary trials and the verdict that stunned America.
In June 2025, Karen Read was acquitted of the charges connected to John's death, but convicted of operating under the influence.
With civil litigation continuing and questions surrounding John's final hours still disputed, the case remains one of America's most controversial true-crime stories.
One death. Two trials. A divided nation. And questions that refuse to disappear.
