The Strangers: Keddie Cabin Murders

Residue: A True Crime Podcast

Show Notes

The scariest horror movies are the ones that feel like they could actually happen. The 2008 film The Strangers taps into one of our most basic fears of being targeted by people we don’t know, in a place where we’re supposed to feel safe. The movie follows a couple whose night takes a terrifying turn when three masked strangers begin terrorizing them at an isolated home. The director, Bryan Bertino, was inspired to write The Strangers after hearing about a chilling unsolved case: the Keddie Cabin Murders.

In April 1981, at Cabin 28 in Keddie, California, Sue Sharp, her teenage son John, and his friend Dana Wingate were murdered inside the family’s cabin. Sue’s 12-year-old daughter, Tina, disappeared that same night, and her remains were discovered years later, in 1984. Despite decades of investigation, unanswered questions, and renewed interest in the case, no one has been charged with the murders.

Freddie Prinze was a pioneering stand-up comedian and actor who achieved meteoric fame in the 1970s before his tragic death at age 22. Proudly identifying as a "Hungarican" due to his Puerto Rican and German-Hungarian heritage, he became an overnight sensation after a legendary 1973 performance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. He solidified his status as a cultural icon by starring as Chico Rodriguez in the hit NBC sitcom Chico and the Man, popularizing the catchphrase "Looking good!". Despite his massive professional success and the birth of his son, future actor Freddie Prinze Jr., Prinze struggled privately with severe depression and substance abuse, which tragically culminated in his death from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in January 1977.
