The Doolin-Dalton Gang: The Wild Bunch

BioGraphics - True Biographies & History's Most Fascinating PeopleSaturday, October 31, 2026

Summary

On October 5, 1892, the Dalton Gang attempted a daring daylight robbery of two banks in Coffeyville, Kansas, which ended in a violent shootout resulting in the deaths of four gang members, including leader Bob Dalton. The only survivor, Emmett Dalton, was captured and sentenced to life in prison. This incident marked the end of the original Dalton Gang but paved the way for the formation of the Doolin-Dalton Gang, which became known as the Wild Bunch. Led by Bill Doolin and Bill Dalton, the new gang quickly gained notoriety, committing numerous robberies across the West.

The Wild Bunch's criminal exploits included a series of successful bank and train heists, but their activities drew the attention of law enforcement. A significant confrontation occurred during the Battle of Ingalls in 1893, where a posse of U.S. Marshals engaged the gang in a fierce gunfight, resulting in multiple casualties. Despite the increasing pressure from law enforcement, the Wild Bunch continued their criminal activities until internal conflicts and law enforcement efforts began to dismantle the gang.

By the mid-1890s, many members of the Wild Bunch were killed in shootouts or captured. Bill Dalton was killed in a confrontation with lawmen in 1894, and by 1896, the gang's remaining members, including Doolin, faced relentless pursuit. Ultimately, Doolin was captured and killed in an ambush in 1896, marking the end of the Wild Bunch and solidifying their legacy as one of the most infamous outlaw gangs of the Old West.
