Summary
A 53-year-old French woman, Anne de Nouchetel, becomes embroiled in a complex online scam that leads her to believe she is in a romantic relationship with actor Brad Pitt. The saga begins when Anne, feeling isolated and unhappy in her second marriage, creates an Instagram account and receives a message from someone claiming to be Pitt's mother, Jane Etta Pitt. This connection spirals into a web of deceit involving multiple fake characters, including a supposed Brad Pitt account, an agent, and even a doctor.
As Anne becomes increasingly invested in this online relationship, she is manipulated into sending large sums of money, believing she is helping Pitt with his medical bills and other expenses. Over the course of 18 months, she transfers nearly 800,000 euros, convinced that she is supporting a man she loves. The situation escalates when she is approached by someone posing as an FBI agent, further deepening her financial losses.
Eventually, Anne discovers that she has been scammed after seeing paparazzi photos of the real Brad Pitt with another woman. This revelation leads her to confront the reality of her situation, prompting her to report the scam to the police. The investigation uncovers a network of scammers based in Nigeria, but Anne's financial recovery remains uncertain. Her story gains media attention, but the coverage is often sensationalized, leading to public ridicule. Struggling with the fallout, Anne attempts to take her own life multiple times but survives. She later writes a book about her experience, aiming to raise awareness about online scams and support other victims.
