Conversations with Amoda Maa - Exploring Awareness Through Dialogue and Living Inquiry

Show Notes

In this episode, Kavi and Amoda explore the subtle but profound shift from loneliness to aloneness. What begins as a reflection on the discomfort of solitude opens into a deep inquiry into the root of human suffering — the existential sense of separation. Together, they examine the many ways we habitually distract ourselves from the rawness of being — from the small everyday impulses to keep busy, to the deeper patterns of addiction, emotional avoidance, and compulsive seeking. At the heart of this inquiry lies a powerful invitation: to stop running from the quiet, and instead turn inward with open awareness. Rather than offering a method or goal, the dialogue invites a deep recognition that awareness is already present, already whole, and that what we most deeply long for cannot be found through striving, but only through a willingness to stop and fully meet what is here. What is offered here is a simple yet radical truth: that what we call "the void" is not empty or frightening, but the very fullness of being itself. This is not a conversation about escaping life, but about entering it more fully — by embracing aloneness not as a problem, but as the sacred ground where healing, love, and true wholeness can finally be discovered.

Beneath the constant movement of thought, emotion, and experience is something profoundly simple: the undeniable fact of being. Yet this simplicity is so often overlooked in our fascination with the changing circumstances of life and our habitual tendency to make everything about "me." In this bonus episode, recorded during a recent daylong gathering in Berkeley, Amoda explores how the constant movement of self-referencing creates an internal noise that reinforces the sense of separation and keeps us searching for peace and fulfillment in the content of experience. Even the spiritual search can become part of this movement, as we imagine awakening to be an extraordinary experience waiting somewhere in the future. But the extraordinary is already here, hidden in the very simplicity of being. Through a direct and penetrating exploration, Amoda invites us to look beyond the habitual grasping and resisting of experience and discover the quiet radiance that remains untouched by life's changing circumstances. This is not an invitation to withdraw from life or deny the human experience, but to recognize the lightness and freedom that become apparent when we no longer create a separate self out of everything that happens.

What if awakening is not an experience at all? In this episode of Conversations with Amoda Maa, Amoda and Kavi explore one of the most persistent misunderstandings on the spiritual path: the belief that awakening will arrive as a particular experience — perhaps a state of bliss, unity, expanded consciousness, or profound peace. Amoda speaks to the essential difference between an experience, which inevitably comes and goes, and awakening itself, which cannot be gained, maintained, or lost. Spiritual openings and profound states may have great value, but they can also become something the seeker grasps onto, claims, or attempts to recreate. The conversation moves beyond the search for spiritual experience into the deeper questions of what remains when every experience passes, what happens when identification with the personhood falls away, and why genuine awakening can be both profoundly transformative and surprisingly ordinary. Amoda also speaks personally about her own awakening, the unexpected unfolding of her role as a spiritual teacher, and what it means when life is no longer experienced through the lens of personal authorship. Ultimately, the conversation arrives at something simpler still: awake presence recognizing itself, and the fragrance of love that is revealed when the veil of separation falls away. A candid and intimate exploration of awakening, ego, awareness, spiritual experience, and what cannot be lost.

In this bonus episode, taken from a recent online retreat, Amoda Maa explores one of the most fundamental movements of the human experience: the search for peace. We often imagine that peace will come when something changes—when the body feels better, the relationship becomes more harmonious, the future feels more certain, the mind becomes quiet, or we finally reach some spiritual state of completion. But when peace is always located in the next moment, this moment becomes something to move away from. Amoda invites us to look closely at this subtle mechanism of seeking and at the inner tension created by trying to manage experience, circumstances, emotions, relationships, and even consciousness itself. Rather than asking, "How can I find peace?" she points toward a more direct inquiry: what happens when we stop moving away from this moment? True peace is not found in perfecting the content of experience, but in recognizing the aware presence that remains unchanged beneath the continual movement of thought, feeling, sensation, and circumstance. The episode closes with a period of silence and a simple invitation to discover, directly, what remains when the movement of seeking begins to soften.

In this bonus episode, taken from a recent online public meeting, Amoda Maa explores the deeply ingrained habit of attention contracting around the objects of experience — our thoughts, feelings, sensations, memories, problems, and plans. When attention becomes bound up with experience, identity becomes bound up with it too: I am this thought. I am this feeling. I am this difficulty. From here arises the constant attempt to manage, control, fix, reject, or change what is happening. Amoda invites a different possibility: the relaxation of attention. Not as a withdrawal from experience or an attempt to get rid of anything, but as a softening of the habitual movement toward experience. Sounds can simply be heard, sensations felt, emotions allowed to move, without immediately turning them into something that must be interpreted or resolved. As this habit gradually loosens, something quieter begins to reveal itself — the openness of being that is already here beneath all movement. Awakening, Amoda suggests, need not be a dramatic event or a special state to attain. More often, it is a gradual unveiling of what has never been absent. The invitation is not to manufacture stillness, but to become available to the presence that is already here.

Awakening is often imagined as something dramatic—a powerful energetic shift, an extraordinary state, a moment in which everything suddenly changes. But the revelation of our true nature is often far quieter than this. In this bonus episode, Amoda Maa explores how liberation is revealed not through effort, discipline, or the attempt to transcend experience, but through a simple willingness to meet what is here without resistance. As the subtle effort to maintain and protect the separate self begins to relax, the contraction at the centre of experience is seen to be less solid than it appears. Through this "soft stop," identification with thoughts, emotions, sensations, and patterns begins to loosen, revealing the open field of awareness in which all experience arises. Awakening then becomes less about reaching a special state and more about recognizing the openness, presence, and being that have always been here. Amoda ends with a simple invitation: notice what you may be resisting right now, and see whether it can be allowed to be here exactly as it is.
