The Day a Warm Front Turned a Tank Car into a Flying Coffin

A pickup-truck-sized chunk of steel landed 330 feet from where it stood seconds before, killing the police chief and fire chief of Waverly, Tennessee. The gas detectors had tested clean just 20 minutes earlier-so how did a cracked tank car suddenly become a flying bomb?

In this episode, we tell the sequence of decisions, weather shifts, and mechanical facts that led from a nighttime derailment to a deadly afternoon transfer, asking whether protocols designed for one set of conditions can fail when those conditions change. What exactly did a 30-degree temperature swing do to the tank car and the liquefied petroleum gas inside?

Person: Guy Barnett Person: Wilbur York Event: Train No. 584 derailment Date: February 22-24, 1978 Location: Waverly, Tennessee

- Train No. 584 was carrying 92 cars when it derailed at approximately 10:30 PM on February 22, 1978. - 24 cars left the tracks in downtown Waverly, including tank car UTLX 83013 carrying liquefied petroleum gas. - The tank car was recorded as double-wall but was actually single-wall; the crack formed at the moment of derailment. - Hazmat ordered a quarter-mile evacuation and utilities shutdown the morning after the derailment; the wreck crew moved UTLX 83013, likely enlarging the crack. - At 2:38 PM on February 24 a gas detection sweep read no leak; at 2:58 PM a piece of the tank car landed 330 feet away and two chiefs were dead.
