The Future of Mental Health in Canada - Dr. Sean Hill, The Honourable Dr. Carolyn Bennett, Karn Nichols
Life's a WreckShow Notes
Welcome back to Life's a Wreck (it's been a minute). I've been working on this podcast for the past five months and finally get to share it with all of you. It's been an experimental podcast for me as I look forward to what the future may hold for Life's a Wreck and let me promise you it has been a ton of fun piecing together. The entirety of this episode is inspired by the future. The future of me, of this pod and of the mental health care system in Canada. I was inspired to create this episode while listening to an episode of Malcolm Gladwell's Revisionist History. The episode was on experiments and specifically what magical experiments experts in various fields would do to vastly advance their understanding of their work. I wondered "huh what would this look like for mental health" and the concept for this pod and its new sound was born.
In this episode, you'll hear from: The Scientific Director of the Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatics (CAMH) Dr. Sean Hill, Canada's first EVER Federal Minister of Mental Health and Addiction The Honourable Dr. Carolyn Bennett, and the Executive Director of the Canadian Mental Health Association's Nova Scotia chapter Karn Nichols. Prominent voices in the mental health space, all coming together to discuss what the future of mental health looks like in Canada. Kick back and relax for a much-anticipated episode of Life's a Wreck.

More from Life's a Wreck
Today I'm joined by The Honourable Ya'ara Saks, Canada's Federal Minister of Mental Health and Addiction. Canada is currently in an election cycle, and that's why I think it's important to learn more about the politicians who will be shaping policy surrounding mental health for years to come. If you're tuning into this episode, don't forget to vote in Canada's Federal Election until April 28th - more info below:
Talking for Change is Canada's first formal, national and federally funded secondary prevention program to prevent child sexual abuse and the use of child sexual exploitation material (CSEM) and Dr. Ainslie Heasman is at the helm. An acclaimed psychologist and a leader in the field of child sexual abuse prevention, she joins us today to share more about the goals of this program and how it will help ensure a safer future for Canadian youth.
Please see below several mental health resources to help you through times of suicidal ideation.
In 1985, era-defining director John Huges introduced us to a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal. Today, some guy with a podcast introduces us to the Life's a Wreck Community.
What does it mean to be a hero? This week on the podcast we answer that question. I'm thrilled to be joined by Canadian Paralympic sledge hockey athlete Kevin Rempel to discuss the mindset that has helped him overcome unthinkable odds. A living testament to the power of the mind and positive thinking, Kevin was once told he would never walk again following a motocross accident in his early 20s. Around the same time, Kevin also lost his father to suicide. During our conversation, Kevin reveals how he overcame suicidal ideation of his own and not only set himself on a more positive path but one that led to him regaining the ability to walk and representing Canada on the world's stage at the 2014 Sochi Paralympics. A beautiful introduction to The Hero's Mindset.
