Lucifer, Satan & the Kingdom of Darkness: What the Church Got Wrong About the Enemy (Part 2A of The Enemy Series)
Faith on the FringeShow Notes
What if everything you were taught about the enemy was built on a translation error? The word Lucifer appears four times in the Bible, and three of those times it refers to Jesus Christ. This is Part 2A of a four-part series, focused on the Old Testament. Leah and Malaine deconstruct centuries of spiritual warfare theology that collapsed the entire kingdom of darkness into a single figure and blurred what Scripture actually says about the adversary. They trace the word Lucifer back to Jerome's Latin Vulgate rendering of the Hebrew halel, the shining one, the morning star, and unpack how a title that belongs to Jesus got reassigned to a being the Bible never names that way. From there they dig into the fall of Lucifer narrative most Christians accept without question, walk Isaiah 14 as a taunt against the king of Babylon, and show that ha-satan is a title meaning the accuser rather than a personal name. Along the way they cover Michael Heiser's Canaanite myth reading, the divine council scene in Job, Persian Zoroastrian influence after the exile, the Dead Sea Scrolls' Sons of Light and Sons of Darkness, and the biblical mysteries the Western church buried that Eastern Christian tradition never adopted.

The fourth is the king of Babylon. None refers to Satan. The Hebrew halel that became "Lucifer" reads as a verb meaning to howl or wail everywhere else it appears, in Zechariah 11:2, Ezekiel 21:12, and Jeremiah 47:2. The noun reading exists in a single verse. Ha-satan in the Hebrew Bible is a title, the accuser, not a personal name, and it is applied to humans, to the angel of the Lord, and to a courtroom role in the divine council, never to a being who deceives on his own. The Old Testament shows a scattered, organized opposition of many named adversaries, watchers, and territorial spirits, which the Western church later collapsed into one figure called Satan. The morning-star title belongs to Christ in Revelation 22:16, which raises the question of whether the kingdom of darkness exploited the church's misidentification to gain legal ground in believers' lives. Featured Scripture Revelation 22:16 "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star." Application: the morning-star title the Western church reassigned to "Lucifer" is one Jesus claims for Himself. Reading Isaiah 14 in its own context keeps that title where the text actually puts it. 00:00 Intro: fringe theology & the margins of faith 01:45 The complex hierarchy of dark powers 03:55 Hosea 4:6: destroyed for lack of knowledge 06:50 Salvation vs equipping for deliverance 09:30 How words get manipulated in culture 14:00 Jerome's Vulgate & the morning star origin 18:55 Halel as a verb: howl, lament, wail 23:30 Do demons use names in deliverance ministry? 26:10 Isaiah 14: King of Babylon & Canaanite myth 32:30 Morning star: the title Jesus claimed 42:00 Ha-Satan: a title, not a personal name 48:30 Divine council, Job & Persian influence

Your biggest cheerleaders will be the people holding the pitchforks. Leah and Malaine both spent years being platformed in the New Age, and both say what they're seeing in Christian celebrity culture right now goes further than anything they saw there. Nobody who ends up exposed online set out to start a cult. Good people with a heart for God get platformed and pedestaled, the work of maintaining the platform starts eating the time they used to spend with Him, pride finds an open door, and the same crowd that worshipped them shows up with pitchforks. Leah goes back to the affiliates she paid tens of thousands of dollars who turned on her hardest, and Malaine talks about the leaders who stop hearing the truth once everyone around them turns into a yes person. The second half turns to the whiplash of leaving the New Age for Jesus. Some swing into legalism and cessationism out of fear of being deceived again. Others land in hyper charismatic circles where the pedestals are even higher. Malaine tells the story of the nanny whose kindness led her to Jesus while she was still running New Age retreats, and Leah explains why it took her a full year to say yes to Him. So if Jesus stood next to you in church this Sunday, would He be thrilled with what He saw? I'm pretty sure that's a different kingdom." -Leah Steele Barnett Key Takeaways Why nobody who gets exposed online starts out planning to manipulate the body of Christ. The warning Malaine got in the New Age about the woman idolizing her, and how it came true that same year. Why the people who platform you are usually the first to turn on you. How the work of maintaining a platform quietly replaces time with Jesus. What happens to a leader once the people around them become yes people. Why attacking someone online opens a door for you and activates a spirit of offense in them. The two directions ex-New Agers tend to swing: legalism and cessationism, or hyper charismatic circles. What fear of being deceived again looked like in Malaine's first season with Jesus. The nanny who never judged Malaine and ended up leading her to Jesus. Why staying curious and sitting in judgment can't happen at the same time. The one thing Leah was delivered of the moment she said yes to Jesus. Featured Scripture "Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them." Psalm 115:8 (ESV) Application: Malaine's point is that whatever we idolize, we start to resemble, deaf and blind to what's in front of us. That goes for a celebrity pastor as much as a carved image. Before you defend or attack anyone in the public eye this week, ask Jesus whether you've handed that person your discernment. Then take it to your prayer closet and let Him show you where your worship has drifted. Leah had decided a pastor was blasphemous before she had watched a minute of his sermon. A guest cancelled, so this one is off the cuff, and it opens with Leah admitting she did the exact thing this show tells people not to do. She saw clips of Otha Turnbow's sermon on Jesus going to hell, felt the emotional charge, went looking for other people's reactions, and sealed his fate in her mind without going to the source. In this conversation she walks through the rebuke she got in her spirit, what she found when she finally watched the sermons, and why she says the short clip exists to deny you context and sell you a reaction instead. The second half turns toward the economy around all of it. Leah and Malaine cover celebrity Christian culture and who is monetizing what, the Judas spirit running through exposure ministry, how to tell a watchman from an accuser, the man who publicly gave Jenny Weaver seventy two hours to live, and why loyalty to a ministry turns into idolatry faster than anybody expects. They close on holding every ministry loosely, the spiritual covering language nobody can find in scripture, and Jesus inviting the question at the foot of Mount Hermon. Why the kingdom of darkness has an interest in keeping you off long form content, and what the three second hit is actually doing. What Otha Turnbow's sermon on Jesus and hell actually says once you sit through all three of them in full. Both hosts are monetizing, and they explain how an assignment from God and a Patreon can sit in the same hand. The Judas spirit in exposure ministry, and the test Leah uses on how she feels after watching one. How to tell a watchman from an accuser, including the one thing a watchman always does that an accuser never bothers with. The man who publicly gave Jenny Weaver seventy two hours to live, and what she was doing when the deadline passed. Why loyalty to a pastor or a platform turns into idolatry, and what Malaine says happens to your prophetic hearing once it does. The spiritual covering and spiritual father language that neither of them can find anywhere in scripture. Featured Scripture Proverbs 18:17 "He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him." (KJV) Application: The first version of a story always sounds airtight, which is exactly why God put a second step in the verse. Somebody has to come and search it. A forty second clip is the first voice, and so is the reaction video stacked on top of it, and neither one has been searched by anybody. Leah ran into this in her own week and names it plainly in the episode. Before you form a verdict on a brother or sister, go be the neighbour who searches it, which usually means watching the whole thing and reading the whole chapter. Your Bible probably says sons of Israel in Deuteronomy 32. Israel was not born for another two generations. The Qumran copy of that verse runs a thousand years older than the text every modern translation was built from, and it reads sons of God, while the Septuagint that Jesus read has angels of God. Leah Steele Barnett opens the July Supernatural Bible Session on that discrepancy and builds the divine council worldview out of three passages, Genesis 11, Deuteronomy 32 and Psalm 82. The thread runs from the tower at Babel, where God says let us go down, through the seventy nations counted in Genesis 10, to the moment God divides those nations among the sons of God and keeps Jacob as his own portion. Abraham gets called in the very next chapter. Malaine Lea Butler and Jenny Embrey carry the deliverance side of it: principalities assigned over territories, why bloodline work traces back to Babel, how spiritual beings meant to point the nations toward Yahweh acquired power through worship instead, and where the shedim of Deuteronomy 32:17 come from. The session closes on four places heaven answers Psalm 82, Jesus quoting it in the temple in John 10, the seventy sent out in Luke 10, the scattered languages gathering at Pentecost in Acts 2, and the song of Moses sung again in Revelation 15. The Melchizedek scroll from Qumran, the long ending of Deuteronomy 32:43 that Hebrews 1:6 quotes, and the question of whether a demon can drive out a demon all get their turn. Nimrod gets his own session in August. But the LORD's portion is his people, Jacob his allotted heritage." (ESV) "When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when he divided up humankind, he set the boundaries of the peoples according to the number of the heavenly assembly. For the LORD's allotment is his people, Jacob his special possession." (NET) Application: This is the keystone. Genesis 10 lists the nations scattered at Babel and the tradition counts seventy of them, and these two verses say God divided those nations according to the number of the sons of God and kept Jacob as his own portion. Most English Bibles read sons of Israel here because they follow the Masoretic text, a Hebrew tradition copied by scribes in the medieval period, and Israel was not born for another two generations after Babel. The Qumran copy of Deuteronomy is a thousand years older and reads sons of God, and the Septuagint, translated by Jewish scholars two centuries before Christ, has angels of God. Read that way, God calls Abraham in the chapter immediately after the nations are handed away, and the timing is the point. Everything the session covers about territorial spirits, principalities over regions and the great commission runs back through these two verses. A missionary came in for early stage Alzheimer's and turned out to be still attending rituals. Content warning: satanic ritual abuse, ritual abuse inside churches and at the hands of ministers, dissociative identity disorder, parts and programming, child abuse, trafficking and suicide. Nothing graphic is described. Handled with care, still heavy. Headphones if there are little ears nearby. Dr. Robin Perry Braun has spent 13 years in private practice working with survivors most people are not equipped to help, and this is her second time on Faith on the Fringe. In this conversation she explains why survivors go silent at the moment their memories surface, why almost none of them ever escaped a coven because dissociative identity disorder meant they never knew, and what it sounds like when a woman describes a friend killed in front of her at five years old and still says she had the best childhood. The second half turns toward the people doing the helping. Dr. Robin walks through the open doors ministers carry into this work, the SRA minister she was told was still reprogramming the people who came to him, and why an NDA inside a ministry functions as the Babylonian version of Matthew 18. She closes with the practical side: muscle response testing, voice to skull work with targeted individuals, and why healing in small bites keeps a survivor from breaking. JOIN THE FRINGE COMMUNITY ON PATREON: https://patreon.com/Faithonthefringe JOIN OUR MONTHLY BIBLE STUDY HERE: https://supernaturalbiblesessions.com "The most important thing we can be is safe. Way over gifting, way over whatever, because people's nervous systems will not let them heal. They won't let the wall down until they start to feel safe." -Dr. Robin Perry Braun Key Takeaways The three reasons survivors of satanic ritual abuse stay silent, and the one that has nothing to do with fear. Why almost none of Dr. Robin's clients ever escaped a coven, and what that means for how SRA actually operates. What a screen memory sounds like, told through a client who kept insisting she had the best childhood. How to tell whether a deliverance minister or a therapist is safe, and why the people most drawn to this work often carry the most open doors. The SRA minister she was told was still reprogramming the people who came to him for help. Why an NDA in a ministry is the same instrument as a Masonic oath, and the verse it is standing in for. What Malaine says is hiding behind the boards and the published accountability statements. Why Dr. Robin says healing has to come in small bites, and what happens to people who get it all at once. The one test she gives anybody wondering whether something is ringing true about their own life. Featured Scripture Matthew 18:15-17 "Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: and if he neglect to hear the church, let him be as an heathen man and a publican." (KJV) Application: Jesus lays out a path with an ending, and the ending is public. Go alone, then with witnesses, then to the whole assembly. Dr. Robin's argument in this episode is that a non disclosure agreement takes that process and removes its final step, which is exactly what a Masonic oath does when it tells a man to say nothing about his brother. The instruction was given to stop gossip while still protecting the vulnerable, so anything that silences the third step is doing the opposite of what the text asks. Read it before you sign anything, and before you accept somebody's assurance that a board exists. Timestamps
Two verses after "freely give," Jesus tells His disciples the worker is worthy of his food. Matthew 10:8 has become the verse people quote whenever a minister charges for anything. Leah and Malaine read the whole chapter, starting with who Jesus was actually sending out and what He told them to take with them. From there the conversation moves through deliverance ministers charging sixty dollars a session, megachurch tithes and building funds, what the Acts church did with its money, and the backlash over Philip Anthony Mitchell's podcast tour. Who Jesus was sending out in Matthew 10, and the towns He told them to pass by. Why "raise the dead" is missing from some manuscripts of this verse. What Jesus said two verses later about the worker and his food. Why a sixty dollar deliverance session draws more outrage online than a pastor with five jets. What the early church in Acts did with the money it collected, and what one church in Salt Lake City still does. The moment charging for ministry crosses into manipulation. Why paying for a session was what got Malaine out of bed and into her breakthrough. How Leah and Malaine read the backlash over Philip Anthony Mitchell's podcast tour. Featured Scripture "Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give." Matthew 10:8 (NIV) Application: This is the verse people quote most often in the debate over charging for ministry, and Leah and Malaine read it from the top of the chapter. Jesus was sending twelve specific men to the lost sheep of Israel, and two verses later He told them the workman is worthy of his meat. Before you stand on a verse, read the chapter around it, and ask who He was speaking to and what He was asking of them. Then take your own conviction about giving and receiving to Him in prayer. Once He settles it for you, let His answer be enough, whatever anyone else in the body of Christ has to say about it.
