Called Out of Our Comfort Zone: A Conversation with Edward Graham

Show Notes

God likes to call us out of our comfort zone, but often we hesitate out of fear—we like the comfort and safety of the life we have known. But stepping out in faith is where true growth happens. Edward Graham, Chief Operating Officer at Samaritan’s Purse, shares what God has taught him in leadership, both in the military but also in ministry. Hear how you, too, can step out in faith and obedience to the Lord, in whatever He has for you. He reads a passage from James that he continually goes to when he needs to turn away from doubt and towards belief. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.” – James 1:5-8, ESV Now more than ever, Samaritan’s Purse has an opportunity to love our neighbors that are hurting in the Middle East. Our staff stand ready, training and preparing so when famine comes or disaster hits and everyone else is running away, we can respond in Jesus’ Name. “God expects us—when He entrusts us with His widow’s mite or with His people—to take prudent risk, to go out and multiply in the Gospel.” – Edward Graham Edward talks about trials he has faced in his own life and how they shaped him and encouraged his walk with the Lord. The story in the Bible where Peter walks on water shows Edward that sometimes in life God is calling us to get out of the boat. Often in our Western culture, we strive for comfort and ease. But that is not what the life of a Christian looks like. “Let's get out of the boat. Let's be part of miracles. You’ve got to challenge yourself. You’ve got to put yourself out there sometimes, and maybe it's your church, maybe it's your family, maybe it's your job and career. Somewhere you're safe in the boat. What do you do to take that step and go walk on water and go be part of a miracle?” – Edward Graham None of what is going on in our world surprises God. Kristy and Edward remind listeners that in this world we will have trouble, but we can take heart because Jesus has overcome the world. Edward asks for prayer for our staff and volunteers serving amid disasters and conflicts across the globe and for new endeavors that the ministry is embarking on within its aviation and U.S. rebuild programs. What if meekness isn’t weakness, but strength fully surrendered to God? In this powerful conversation, Drs. Zach and Tim Clinton, sit down with Christian influencer, filmmaker, evangelist, and author, Ryan Miller, to unpack the message behind his new book, Meek as a Mustang: Finding the Strength to Surrender Your Wild Heart to Jesus. Ryan shares why following Jesus calls us out of comfortable Christianity and into a costly faith: one marked by surrender, courage, intimacy, and radical obedience. From stories of the persecuted church to his own journey through failure, influence, and the wilderness, Ryan reminds us that the true measure of success in the Christian life isn’t followers, platforms, or recognition…it’s obedience. Ultimately, it all begins with receiving the love of the Father, because your life will change when you fully believe how much Jesus loves you.

What happens when the people who were supposed to point you toward Christ become the very people who wounded you along the way? In this deeply vulnerable conversation, Skillet frontman John Cooper opens up about one of the darkest seasons of his life which has included church hurt, betrayal, counseling, the pull of deconstruction, and learning to depend on God’s grace one hour at a time. What happens when the person leading others in worship is quietly fighting to stay alive? In this deeply vulnerable conversation, Drs. Zach and Tim Clinton sit down with singer, songwriter, worship leader, and producer Baily Hager as she shares her journey through family brokenness, loss, suicidal thoughts, mental health treatment, and ultimately, healing. Baily opens up about the shame that once kept her suffering in silence, the courage it took to ask for help, and how God used faith, therapy, medication, community, and worship throughout her recovery. In a world increasingly marked by division, distraction, and loneliness, what if one of the most powerful ways to reclaim meaningful connection is something as simple as pulling up a chair? In this episode, Drs. Zach & Tim Clinton sit down with pastor and author Ian Simkins to unpack the heart behind his new book, Every Table an Altar, and rediscover the sacred power of presence, hospitality, and embodied friendship. Ian shares why being recognized is not the same as being truly known, how our constant distractions may be stealing the relationships right in front of us, and what the life of Jesus teaches us about making room for people who may not look, think, or believe exactly like we do. If God has graciously invited us to His table, perhaps one of the most important questions we can ask is: Who needs to be invited to ours?

What if failure isn’t something to fear, but one of the greatest gifts you’ve ever been given? In this episode, Dr. Zach and Joshua Broome sit down with renowned quarterback coach and cohost of the Built 4 More Podcast, Denny Thompson, to unpack the privilege of failure, the danger of playing it safe, and why the biggest risk in life may be never taking one at all. Together, they explore how failure can redirect us, discomfort can develop us, and faith gives us the courage to keep moving when life doesn’t go according to plan. Because if you’re lucky, life won’t work out exactly the way you thought it would—and that may be where God does some of His greatest work.
