Executive Functions: The Brain’s Management System
ADHD: Beyond the Distraction - with Dr. Joseph VolpeShow Notes
Why can an intelligent, motivated adult know exactly what needs to be done — and still struggle to get started, stay organized, manage time, control impulses, or follow through? In this episode of ADHD: Beyond the Distraction, Dr. Joseph Volpe explains executive functions as the brain’s management system and explores how difficulties in this area can affect procrastination, task initiation, working memory, time awareness, emotional regulation, relationships, work, college, driving, sleep, and everyday decision-making. Dr. Volpe also discusses why attention problems are often more complex than simply being “distracted,” how anxiety, depression, substance use, and poor sleep can complicate the picture, and why accurate assessment matters. The episode also introduces practical ways to support executive functioning through structure, routines, behavioral strategies, psychological treatment, and, when appropriate, medication. In this introductory episode of ADHD: Beyond the Distraction, Dr. Joseph S. Volpe explains why the term ADHD can sometimes be misleading when applied to adults. While hyperactivity may still be present, many adults struggle more with executive-function deficits involving organization, time management, task initiation, working memory, emotional regulation, impulsivity, and follow-through. Drawing on more than 30 years of clinical experience, Dr. Volpe explains why these difficulties can affect successful, capable adults who may have spent years compensating without ever fully understanding why everyday tasks can feel so difficult. He also discusses the importance of accurate diagnosis, how anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep problems, and substance use can complicate the picture, and why the goal of an evaluation should always be to understand the whole person rather than simply apply a label. Dr. Volpe also explains why this work is personally meaningful to him and introduces the topics to be explored throughout the series, including procrastination, time blindness, relationships, work, treatment, telehealth, and the real-world impact of executive-function difficulties. ADHD: Beyond the Distraction is about looking beneath the surface and understanding what is really going on.
