Ep. 15: When Your Home Is Full of Decisions You Keep Avoiding
Tidy Talk with Suzzanne: Real-Life Decluttering for Midlife WomenShow Notes
Have you ever walked into a room, looked at all the things you need to deal with...and walked right back out? Sometimes what looks like a clutter problem is really a decision problem. In this episode of Tidy Talk, we’re talking about all those decisions we keep putting off: the box you don’t know what to do with, your grown kids’ belongings, sentimental pieces, and those “I might need this someday” items that keep finding their way back onto the shelf. I’m also sharing the area of my own home that I tend to avoid (yes, even as a professional organizer!) and why I’ve realized that so much of what’s holding me back isn’t the stuff itself. It’s all the decisions attached to it. We’ll talk about why “I don’t know” doesn’t always mean “I want to keep it,” how decision fatigue can make decluttering feel harder than it needs to, and why you don’t have to make every decision today. Sometimes making just one decision you’ve been avoiding is enough to create a little breathing room. ✨ Join me in the Reset Room! We’re meeting Saturday, August 29th for our monthly free guided decluttering session. Share the area that’s been frustrating you or where you’ve been feeling stuck, and we’ll talk it through together before choosing a place to focus. Then we’ll spend some time getting to work alongside one another. It’s completely free and your camera is optional. 👉 Save your free spot here:

Have you ever looked around your home and thought, "I already decluttered this space. Why am I doing it again?" Here's the thing: Decluttering isn't something you finish once and never have to think about again. Especially in midlife, when so much of life is changing. The kids grow up and move out. Your routines shift. Your priorities change. And suddenly, the things you've held onto for years might not fit the life you're living today. In this episode of Tidy Talk, we're talking about why decluttering is an ongoing process, why that's perfectly normal, and how to stop feeling like you're constantly starting over. We'll explore how to: Let go of the idea that decluttering has a finish line.
You finally made some progress decluttering your home. Maybe you cleared a drawer, tackled a closet or made a few decisions you've been putting off for months. It feels great! But then life gets busy, and before you know it, another week has gone by. Sound familiar? For women in midlife and the empty nest years, finding time to declutter can be challenging, especially when you're juggling work, family responsibilities, aging parents and everything else life brings. In this episode of Tidy Talk, I'm sharing what happened during our first Clutter-Free Circle Connection Call and decluttering session with a wonderful group of women who recently joined us for a two-week experience. They showed up motivated, chose an area to work on and started making decisions. And one of the things that made it so special was knowing they weren't doing it alone. But what happens when that first burst of motivation wears off? We'll talk about how to keep making progress without feeling like you have to declutter every day, why taking a break doesn't erase what you've accomplished, and one simple thing you can do before walking away from a project that makes it easier to pick up where you left off. Because the goal isn't to spend every free moment organizing. It's to create a home that's easier to live in, where you can find what you need, enjoy your space and spend less time managing all the stuff. You don't have to keep going every single day to keep making progress. You just need a way to come back to what you've started.
Decluttering in midlife can feel different than it did years ago. There may be decades of belongings, memories, kids’ things, family items and decisions you’ve been putting off because you’re simply not sure what to do with them. And sometimes, what you need isn’t another organizing tip. You need support while you’re actually doing it. In this episode of Tidy Talk, I’m talking about why having encouragement, accountability and someone alongside you can make such a difference when you’re trying to clear the clutter and keep going. Because sometimes the biggest shift isn’t how much we let go of. It’s realizing we don’t have to figure it all out alone. And that’s exactly why I created the Clutter-Free Circle membership. It’s a place to keep going with support, accountability and time to actually work on your spaces without feeling like you have to do it all at once or do it alone. 💛 Clutter-Free Circle Membership
Fall has a way of making us look around our homes and think, Okay, now I'm finally going to deal with all of this. But when your mind jumps from starting to everything it would take to finish, it can be easy to put the whole thing off for another day. In Episode 19 of Tidy Talk, we're talking about that all-or-nothing mindset and a different question you can ask yourself this fall: Instead of focusing on everything you haven't gotten done, what could feel different in your home a few months from now? Maybe your closet is easier to use. Maybe there's finally room to put things away. Maybe you've made decisions about the boxes you've been avoiding, or there's simply one area of your home that no longer feels overwhelming every time you walk past it. Your whole house doesn't have to change for your home to start feeling different. And sometimes we're so busy noticing everything we haven't gotten to yet that we forget to look at what we have done and recognize how even those small changes are already making our home feel a little better. 🍂 Registration is OPEN for Clear Your Clutter: Fall Edition! Decluttering in midlife can feel very different than it did years ago. By this stage of life, so many of the things in our homes are connected to people, memories and different seasons we’ve lived through. The kids’ things, family keepsakes, gifts, belongings from parents, clothes from an earlier version of ourselves—even things we don’t necessarily want anymore can carry a story that makes letting go feel complicated. In Episode 18 of Tidy Talk, we’re talking about why decluttering can become more emotional in midlife and why having a hard time making certain decisions doesn’t necessarily mean you should keep everything. Sometimes it simply means the decision deserves a little more thought. We’ll talk about slowing down, understanding what’s really making an item difficult to let go of, and beginning to decide what still belongs in the life and home you have today. Because the goal isn’t to erase your past or get rid of the things that matter. It’s to keep the memories that are meaningful to you while creating a home that feels easier to live in, manage and enjoy in this season of your life.
