Show Notes

Carl Kurlander, co-writer of St. Elmo's Fire, joins me for the first of a two-part conversation about the true story behind the 1985 Brat Pack classic. It all started with a summer job as a bellhop at the St. Elmo Hotel in Chautauqua, New York, and a waitress named Lynn he couldn't stop thinking about. Carl takes us from an 18-page short story he mailed to her, to a freak scholarship at Universal Studios, to fetching gazpacho for director Joel Schumacher, the mentor who would become his co-writer and, at times, his tormentor. He reveals how a blizzard drive from Cleveland to D.C., a laundry room in an anarchist collective, and a disastrous night on Mulholland Drive all ended up on screen.

Angelo Pizzo, the screenwriter of Hoosiers and Rudy, returns for part two of a conversation about two of the greatest sports films ever made. Angelo reveals the movie star who first agreed to play Coach Norman Dale, and the unlikely producer who cried through the script and finally paid for the film after a year and a half of rejections. He also opens up about working with Gene Hackman, who arrived on set convinced Hoosiers would end his career. He discusses the half hour that had to be cut from the film, how Jerry Goldsmith came to score both movies for almost nothing, and why Rudy’s theme became one of the most recognizable pieces of music in sports. Angelo also shares the casting of Sean Astin, Ned Beatty and Jon Favreau, how Bob Knight inspired Norman Dale, and the story behind his newest and most personal film, Bloomington.

Producer Aliza Rosen joins Kate to discuss You Can See Everything, the documentary from Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim that follows Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes and her partner, Billy Evans, in the weeks before she reports to prison. They also discuss Aliza’s new investigative podcast, The Gilded Rage, hosted by Lauren Malloy. The series begins with a woman’s allegation of a decades-old sexual assault and leads to unanswered questions surrounding the 1985 death of Sherri Clark, an 18-year-old University of Colorado Boulder freshman whose death was ruled an accident. Aliza explains how the investigation came together and why Sherri’s family continues to seek answers more than 40 years later.
