The Rise and Rivalry of Niu Gensheng
Matter of Fact: A play on "matter" (physics) and "facts" (news).Show Notes
Niu Gensheng rose from humble beginnings to become a top executive at Yili before founding Mengniu Dairy in 1999, which he rapidly transformed into a dominant national competitor through innovative and aggressive marketing. His career was marked by a fierce rivalry with his former mentor and the catastrophic 2008 melamine scandal, which eventually forced him to sell control of his commercial empire to the state-owned COFCO to avoid a foreign takeover. Following his retirement, Niu shifted his focus to philanthropy through the Lao Niu Foundation and ultimately relocated to Canada, where he now lives a quiet life away from the spotlight of the Chinese business world.

The union proved to be a facade, as the couple lived separately and the Earl left the marriage completely unconsummated. In 1908, Alice obtained a formal legal annulment, reclaiming her wealth and maiden name to later build a quiet, independent life.
