The discussion focuses on common English idioms and their meanings, with a particular emphasis on their practical applications in everyday life. The hosts highlight idioms such as "Don't put all your eggs in one basket," which advises against risking everything on a single venture, and "sweep something under the rug," which suggests avoiding confrontation with certain issues for the sake of harmony.

They also explore the idiom "bite the bullet," which conveys the idea of enduring a painful situation, and "spill the beans," which refers to revealing secrets or gossiping. The hosts encourage listeners to incorporate these idioms into their daily conversations, emphasizing the importance of practical usage over mere recognition. They invite audience engagement through sharing personal experiences related to these idioms and suggest utilizing their social media for further learning and interaction.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket,中文幾乎一模一樣,就是不要孤注一擲、不要把所有風險押在同一個地方。 阿鍵老師補充,早期農業社會裡,雞蛋就等於你的資產,這樣想就很好記。口語上也可以縮短,直接一句 all your eggs in one basket?語氣一出來,對方就知道你覺得他太冒險了。 John老師順手開了個玩笑:台灣現在是不是 all our eggs in one basket?那個籃子叫 AI。竹科的朋友聽到應該會心一笑。 然後是生活版。John老師和太太超愛吃蛋,滷蛋、煎蛋、scrambled eggs 通通來,去 Costco 一買就是六十幾顆。所以他會提醒自己 don't put all the eggs in one cart,推車上別疊太高。阿鍵老師更狠,說應該是 don't put all your eggs in one stove,不要全部拿去滷。 有些事,掃到地毯下就好 這是 John老師最愛的一個:sweep something under the rug,把東西掃到地毯底下,也就是避而不談、眼不見為淨。 有趣的是,同一句話在不同年紀,動機完全不一樣。 青少年做這件事,通常是怕被罵。John老師說他國高中時很怕事,老師一問,他就直接 "He did it." 標準的抓耙子。那時候深信 honesty is the best policy。 長大社會化之後才發現,有些事真的不用拿放大鏡檢視。為了家庭和諧、為了顧大局,大事化小、小事化無。想像在台北辦公室,同事開會時講錯一個小數字,你真的要當場糾正嗎?有時候 just sweep it under the rug,大家都輕鬆一點。 John老師的結論是:It's not all bad. 自己生活也會快樂一點。 再痛也要撐過去:bite the bullet 阿鍵老 師說這個她一開始沒辦法馬上猜到,看了解釋之後才覺得「欸,還真的蠻像的」。 Bite the bullet,意思是咬緊牙關、硬著頭皮去做那件你千百萬個不願意的事。 John老師小學時就常聽英文老師這樣說。全班哀嚎不要作業,老師就一句 "You gotta bite the bullet." John老師說他在 Café 節目裡超常用,吐槽其他老師講太多就是 "You spilled the beans!",要先公布今天的重點也會說 "I gotta spill the beans today." 他自己承認現在有點變成口頭禪,快成 clickbait 了。 最典型的情境還是朋友八卦。有人說「上禮拜我看到 Alex 跟 Tina……」,然後停住。這時候你就可以說 "Go on, spill the beans!" 不要含在嘴巴裡,全部倒出來。 阿鍵老師順帶提到另一個說法 let the cat out of the bag。兩個怎麼分?let the cat out of the bag 比較像是誰不小心把秘密戳破了;spill the beans 則常用在催別人快講八卦。想看更多真實用法,可以去 YouGlish 搜搜看,大多會出現在浪漫喜劇或影集裡。 而如果你根本不想聽八卦呢?也很簡單,sweep it under the rug 就好。
