The Sports Doctor with Dr Robert Weil

Youth Sports Overuse, Neuromuscular Testing, and Proactive Wellness with Joe Janosky and Al Pirnia

Dr. Bob Weil hosts a doubleheader on youth sports overuse and functional wellness, talking neuromuscular testing and the mental game with athlete health consultant Joe Janosky, then proactive, root-cause medicine with national wellness expert Al Pirnia.

A Doubleheader Opens Live From Chicago Dr. Bob Weil opens live from Chicago with his usual Sports Doctor sponsor rundown, thanking Global Schoolwear by Tommy Hilfiger, Lower Extremity Review magazine, Bryan Therapeutics, and UK Health Radio across the pond. He previews a doubleheader featuring athlete health consultant Joe Janosky, a sports medical leader who has worked as a physical therapist, athletic trainer, and public health researcher, and national wellness expert Al Pirnia, founder of Changing Life's Destiny and CEO of EverHealth Incorporated. Weil promises his regular Sports Doctor's In segment to close the hour. He frames the show around decades of covering every level of sports, from elite athletes to weekend warriors to the parents and coaches around them, noting how youth sports has exploded into a business where talent brings pressure, painkillers, and mental strain, a theme he says drove him to co-write his book #HeySportsParents before welcoming Joe Janosky to the call.

Joe Janosky's Path And The Mental Game Joe Janosky thanks Weil for the invitation and explains his path into sports medicine, beginning as a physical therapist before earning his athletic training certification, a master's in exercise science and health promotion, and eventually a doctorate in public health, a progression he says shifted his focus from individual patients to entire populations of athletes. Weil connects this breadth to what he calls the mental game, recalling Athletico Physical Therapy founder Mark Kaufman as a past guest and stressing how alignment of the foot affects everything above it, especially in figure skating, where ignored foot pain often masks the knee problems that plague female athletes. He asks Janosky to rate his own sports psychology skills, and Janosky, though not a trained psychologist, credits twenty-three years of on-the-job experience, pivoting to describe neuromuscular control of the lower body as essential for every athlete and the subject of a major research project he has spent roughly a decade building.

Neuromuscular Control And 16,000 Athletes Janosky describes data drawn from more than 16,000 young athletes, ages 10 to 19, tested for neuromuscular control of the trunk, knee, and foot during simple movement tasks, finding that 80 to 90 percent showed deficient control. Weil presses him on contributing factors, mentioning his own two essentials for athletes, strengthening the feet and ankles and working balance, or proprioception, and recommending the Sanddune Stepper as beach-like training equipment he has used for years. Janosky lists structural causes such as high arches, flat feet, and bow-leggedness alongside strength deficits and even poor sleep the night before testing. The two recall Yankees and White Sox infielder Eric Soderholm, the first baseball player to wear orthotics in his spikes in 1977 and work with a hypnotist, as an early sign of today's accepted mental-game science. Janosky warns parents against mistaking confident opinions on social media for real expertise, urging them to ask whether a claim is rooted in evidence, before directing listeners to josephjanosky.com and his Athlete Durability Index project.

A New Book For Sports Parents During the break, Weil promotes his new book, co-written with former Hall of Fame volleyball player Sharkie Zartman, #HeySportsParents, An Essential Guide for Any Parent with a Child in Sports, noting the pair bring more than seventy years of combined youth sports experience. He outlines its four sections: Sports Parenting 101, where Zartman covers
