Tea at 221B

In this episode of "Tea at 221B," host Craig Hart explores the world of audio dramas, focusing on their acclaimed Sherlock Holmes series. The guest, RJ Bayley, the voice actor for Sherlock Holmes, shares insights into his approach to portraying the iconic detective. RJ discusses the challenge of stepping into such a well-known role, drawing inspiration from past portrayals like Benedict Cumberbatch, Robert Downey Jr., and Jeremy Brett, while striving to bring a fresh, humanized take on Holmes. He highlights the importance of Craig Hart’s script in emphasizing the playful, brotherly dynamic between Holmes and Watson, and how his performance avoids caricature by adding nuanced emotional layers. The conversation also touches on RJ’s influences, such as Richard Burton’s narration in The War of the Worlds, and the creative decisions behind the series, including introducing a health concern for Holmes to add suspense and humanity. RJ shares details about his own podcast, Bayley’s Bookshelf, where he narrates public domain works like Dracula and 1984.
