Piero started originally working in humanitarian aid with the UN and Red Cross, he later became a professor of emergencies and humanitarian action, and in 2004 he started his exploration into the scientific evidence for life after death, leading to several acclaimed books. Today he is a researcher at the University of Northampton, and focuses on applying afterlife science to support the bereaved and dying. His unique, evidence-based approach to grief and end-of-life care blends science, psychotherapy, and compassion. He is a member of IANDS, of the Society for Psychical Research, and of the Scientific and Medical Network. A near-death experience (NDE) is typically a profound, life changing, intensely emotional experience that usually occurs during a clinical crisis and has common characteristics and aftereffects. It is not a dream, hallucination, or mental illness (Greyson, 1983). There are no predictive variables to identify who will have an NDE. They happen to people of all ages, religions, socio-economic groups, cultures, educational backgrounds, and belief systems. They occur under a variety of circumstances such as accidents, near-drownings, illnesses, combat, surgical procedures, and childbirth. Following an NDE, experiencers (NDErs) often display some common aftereffects. Research has established a set of common NDE characteristics and long-term aftereffects. Theories used to explain near-death experiences in purely physical terms have been proven inadequate by NDE researchers and others.

In this episode Dani Foffa talks with near-death experiencer Kimberly Clark Sharp. Kim is the author of After the Light: The Spiritual Path to Purpose and a medical social worker who has been involved in the field of near-death studies for more than four decades. She is the founder and president of Seattle IANDS, which began in 1982 and is the world’s oldest support group for near-death experiencers.
