Patented in 1890 by Elijah Bond in Baltimore, the Ouija board was originally marketed as an innocent parlor game, capitalizing on the late 19th-century Spiritualism craze. It was created by entrepreneurs, not mystics, to act as a "talking board" for entertainment, gaining its occult reputation later.
