Barbarian Banter

A Tale of Two Goths

Barbarian Banter

Show Notes

In this episode of Barbarian Banter, we return to our barbarian roots with two brutal and unforgettable Gothic war stories. Jonas begins with the rise of Fritigern and the Gothic migration into Roman territory, tracing the collapse of Gothic unity under pressure from the Huns, the Christian-pagan divide between Fritigern and Athanaric, the Roman betrayal at Marcianopolis, and the long buildup to the Battle of Adrianople. He breaks down why Adrianople was one of the most decisive barbarian victories in history and why Fritigern deserves far more recognition as one of the great Gothic leaders. Dane then picks up the story in Ostrogothic Italy with the Gothic resurgence under Totila, leading into the Battle of Faventia and the legendary duel between the Gothic champion Valaris and the Roman commander Artabazes. From single combat and battlefield honor to Totila’s stirring final speech about blood, freedom, and nationhood, this episode explores two powerful Gothic moments that show the barbarian world at its most heroic, violent, and mythic. Along the way, we discuss the Gothic origins in southern Sweden, the Greuthungi-Tervingi divide, the Roman use of barbarian auxiliaries, the Christianization of the Goths, the fatalism of Germanic warrior culture, the Gothic kingdom in Italy, Belisarius, Theoderic the Great, and the deeper relationship between pagan inheritance and Christian Europe. Did Christian morality undermine the older pagan virtues of honor, glory, strength, and heroic sacrifice, or has modernity distorted Christianity just as much as it has weakened the traditions that came before it? Why could medieval Christian knights still embody an unmistakably heroic warrior ethos, while modern Christianity often appears increasingly pacifistic and egalitarian? And if the heroic ideal survived for centuries after Europe converted, what actually caused it to disappear? Pasted textJoined by The Ark, we trace these questions through paganism, Christianity, mythology, and the history of Western civilization. We discuss the tension between biblical Christianity and the older Indo-European heroic tradition, the strange synthesis of pagan warrior culture and Christianity found in medieval chivalry and Arthurian legend, and whether Christ Himself can be understood as a heroic figure. The conversation also explores how modernity, industrialization, liberalism, over-civilization, and the disappearance of the frontier may have transformed Western values more radically than Christianity ever did. Pasted textFrom Jordan Peterson and the search for a deeper foundation beneath “Judeo-Christian values,” to Roman paganism, Christopaganism, mythology, Stoicism, religious identity, film, and the possibility of reviving heroic storytelling, this episode asks what elements of the ancient Western worldview can still be recovered—and what a genuinely heroic culture might look like today. The Ark ultimately argues for understanding Western civilization through a heroic tradition stretching from ancient Greece and Rome through the Norse sagas and medieval world, rather than treating Christianity as the sole beginning of the Western story. Why do so many people spend years talking about the things they want to create, careers they want to pursue, or adventures they want to have without ever beginning? And what happens when comfort, social media, fear, and the need for approval slowly replace direct experience? In the first-ever in-person episode of Barbarian Banter, we sit down with Harry Miller and Cooper O’Hearn to talk about what separates wanting a life from actually building one. Fresh off our expedition through Kyrgyzstan, we get into documentary filmmaking, storytelling, adventure, and the strange process of turning real experiences into something meaningful on screen. Cooper breaks down why beautiful cinematography is no longer enough, why modern filmmaking can look incredible while saying nothing, and how algorithms, short-form content, AI, and endless optimization are changing the way creators think. From there, the conversation turns toward online identity, virality, authenticity, audience expectations, and why creating something you actually believe in matters more than becoming a servant to engagement. The second half moves deeper into fear, vocation, religion, and action. We talk about learning whether you truly love the work or merely the status attached to it, deliberately putting yourself in uncomfortable situations, making opportunities instead of waiting for them, Christianity and the pagan heroic ideal, Christ as a heroic figure, René Girard, spirituality, adventure, nostalgia, and the problem of rumination. Again and again, the conversation returns to the same basic principle: eventually you have to stop imagining what you could do and accept the consequences of actually doing it. In the second half of Sun and Steel, Yukio Mishima pushes beyond the body into questions of identity, honor, sacrifice, meaning, and the strange desire to lose oneself in something larger. Can the individual ever reach the highest forms of existence alone? Why did Mishima believe beauty required the presence of death? And how did these ideas eventually converge in his military life, his failed coup, and his final attempt to turn philosophy into action? Joined by Patrick Saltykov of The Warrior Philosopher, we dig much deeper into Mishima himself: his aristocratic and samurai family background, traumatic childhood, fascination with masculinity and martyrdom, sexuality, literary development, Japanese aesthetics, and the tension between his Western individualism and Eastern ideas of selfhood. The result is a broader picture of Sun and Steel as both philosophy and autobiography—a record of Mishima trying to reconcile art with action, imagination with reality, and the private individual with the warrior community. -Timestamps:00:00 – Introducing Patrick 02:04 – Recap of Part 105:42 – Mishima’s Aristocratic and Military Roots12:29 – Childhood, Trauma, and Forbidden Masculinity16:26 – Saint Sebastian, Beauty, and Death26:13 – Destroying Beauty to Finally Live29:48 – Death, Action, and the Opponent33:38 – Bataille and Dissolving the Self42:20 – Japanese Beauty, Emptiness, and Impermanence46:42 – Reconciling Art With Physical Action55:50 – Sexuality, Death, and Bridging Flesh58:27 – Forging a Warrior’s Writing Style01:01:46 – Tatenokai and Mishima’s Final Drama01:11:36 – Honor, Beauty, and Heroic Death01:27:09 – Mishima’s Strange Vision of Happiness01:30:16 – Death and the Reality Within01:40:14 – Uniforms and Dissolving Individual Identity01:45:50 – The Union of Will and Duty01:49:47 – Kamikaze Letters and the Absolute01:54:52 – Tragedy and Becoming the Group02:01:39 – Memento Mori and Sublime Experience02:13:23 – Modern Initiation and Rites of Passage02:23:37 – Agnosticism, Spirituality, and Symbolic Meaning02:27:31 – Putting Philosophy Into Practice02:31:31 – Patrick’s Future and Final Thoughts-Jonas’ Links:YouTube: @Jonaskilker Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jonaskilker/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jonaskilkerX: https://x.com/jonaskilkerJonas’ Merch: https://constantinegraphicsco.com/collections/mythic-vitalism Patreon: https://patreon.com/jonaskilkerDanes Links: Youtube: @Thegreatdane269 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_great_dane469/ Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thegreatdane13X: https://x.com/thegreatdane269?s=20 Substack: https://substack.com/@danemillerhassDane’s Merch: https://constantinegraphicsco.com/collections/under-construction

SEA PEOPLES SUMMER MERCH: https://barbarian-banter-shop.fourthwall.com-In Sun and Steel, Yukio Mishima wrestles with the limits of language, the reality of the body, and the gap between imagining a heroic life and actually living one. Can words ever reach the same truth as physical action? Why does tragedy seem to reveal something that ordinary life conceals? And what happens when strength, beauty, discipline, and mortality are treated not as separate concerns, but as parts of the same pursuit?Mishima’s answer begins with the body. He moves from a sickly, bookish youth toward sunlight, weight training, boxing, fencing, and an increasingly deliberate attempt to make his physical form correspond to his inner ideals. Along the way, Sun and Steel becomes a meditation on why the body can reveal truths that words distort, why classical beauty matters, why physical courage is central to heroism, and why the threat of death gives dignity and intensity to the flesh. In this episode we discuss: Yukio Mishima’s life and the origins of Sun and Steel, why Mishima came to distrust the world of words, how he developed what he called the “language of the flesh,” why tragedy requires physical courage and real stakes, what the sun represents as a force of revelation, how weight training became a form of education, why Mishima compared the classical body to a classical education, what Greek sculpture reveals about physical ideals, how his attempted coup and ritual suicide related to the harmony of pen and sword, why the hero must act rather than merely imagine, how boxing and fencing created a reality beyond abstraction, what Mishima meant by the cult of the hero, and much more.TIMESTAMPS00:00 – Introducing Yukio Mishima and Sun and Steel00:10:39 – Heroism, Tragedy, and Physical Reality00:15:32 – Words Versus the Language of Flesh00:26:21 – Tragedy and the Heroic Sensibility00:47:17 – The Sun as Revelation00:56:11 – Steel, Training, and Progressive Overload01:01:02 – The Classical Body and Education01:07:31 – Beauty, Death, and Mishima’s Final Act01:16:15 – Genius Versus Heroism01:18:30 – Boxing, Fencing, and Pure Action01:25:49 – The Cult of the Hero01:42:42 – Audience Q&A Begins01:53:41 – Salvation, God, and Human Nature02:00:02 – Tarot, Divination, and the Occult02:12:44 – God in Nature and Architecture-Jonas’ Links:YouTube: @Jonaskilker Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jonaskilker/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jonaskilkerX: https://x.com/jonaskilkerJonas’ Merch: https://constantinegraphicsco.com/collections/mythic-vitalism Patreon: https://patreon.com/jonaskilkerDanes Links: Youtube: @Thegreatdane269 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_great_dane469/ Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thegreatdane13X: https://x.com/thegreatdane269?s=20 Substack: https://substack.com/@danemillerhassDane’s Merch: https://constantinegraphicsco.com/collections/under-construction

SEA PEOPLES SUMMER MERCH: https://barbarian-banter-shop.fourthwall.com-Welcome to the 3rd ever Barbarian Banter Live program. In this live Q&A, the discussion moves from our Kyrgyzstan expedition and modern equivalents of the ancient war band into conquistadors, Julius Evola, male competition, American mythology, Hinduism, physiognomy, architecture, celebrity culture, meditation, and everything in between. What kinds of brotherhood are still possible in modern life? Why are people drawn to dangerous expeditions and heroic history? And how much of our character, belief, and identity can really be read from the way we live? This episode is less about following a single thesis and more about tracing the connections between history, masculinity, mythology, spirituality, culture, and everyday life as they emerge naturally through your questions. We talk about what made the Eurasian Steppe trip worth doing, whether modern war bands still exist, why conquistador expeditions remain so compelling, Evola and initiation, Kok Boru and male competition, America as a possible heir to Rome, the difference between online and real-world friendship, Hindu mythology and Indo-European religion, the decline of celebrity mystique, visualization and self-hypnosis, physiognomy, Christianity, Slavic mythology, and much more.TIMESTAMPS00:00:15 – Live Q&A and Steppe Questions00:12:19 – Clearing Up the Trip Drama00:16:32 – Modern War Bands and Brotherhood00:25:47 – Conquistadors and Historical Expeditions00:37:04 – Evola, Initiation, and Divine Kingship00:45:18 – Kok Boru and Male Competition00:52:00 – America, Rome, and Strange Mysteries00:57:37 – Taking Online Brotherhood Into Reality01:01:02 – Homesteading, Games, and Dream Lives01:04:16 – Mythologizing Your Own Life01:07:49 – Hinduism and Indo-European Myth01:16:59 – Celebrity Mystique and Modern Fame01:20:17 – Meditation, Visualization, and Manifestation01:25:43 – Christianity, Physiognomy, and Tradition01:31:31 – Final Questions and What Comes Next-Jonas’ Links:YouTube: @Jonaskilker Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jonaskilker/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jonaskilkerX: https://x.com/jonaskilkerJonas’ Merch: https://constantinegraphicsco.com/collections/mythic-vitalism Patreon: https://patreon.com/jonaskilkerDanes Links: Youtube: @Thegreatdane269 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_great_dane469/ Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thegreatdane13X: https://x.com/thegreatdane269?s=20 Substack: https://substack.com/@danemillerhassDane’s Merch: https://constantinegraphicsco.com/collections/under-construction
