Summary
Hardy Haberman, a prominent figure in the leather, fetish, and BDSM community, shares his journey and insights on the intersection of kink and spirituality. He discusses his involvement in the leather scene, which began in the 1970s, and how it has evolved over the decades. Haberman emphasizes the importance of education and safety within the community, particularly in response to the AIDS crisis, which led to the establishment of events like Beyond Vanilla in Dallas, aimed at providing a safe space for exploration and learning.
Haberman also delves into the complexities of identity within the LGBTQ+ community, noting how the leather scene initially catered mainly to gay men but has since expanded to include diverse identities. He reflects on the significance of symbols and codes within the leather community, such as the hanky code, which serves as a form of communication among members. He advocates for a more inclusive understanding of sexuality and spirituality, arguing that the essence of faith should be about acceptance and love rather than judgment.
In his role at the Cathedral of Hope, a progressive church in Dallas, Haberman works to create an inclusive environment for all, including those in the kink community. He believes that spirituality can coexist with one's identity and interests, encouraging individuals to embrace their whole selves. Through his experiences, he aims to challenge stereotypes and promote a message of acceptance, highlighting that everyone deserves a space where they can feel welcomed and valued.
