The Race F1 Rewind

Show Notes

Matt Bishop (journalist, editor, novelist and PR) and Richard Williams (journalist, author and broadcaster) are here to reappraise the past - and they'd love to have you along for the ride! In the second part of our three-episode mini series, marking the 30th anniversary of the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, Matt and Richard take a chronological look at the events of F1's so-called blackest weekend, when both Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna were killed in action. It's been described as a weekend 'when God turned his back', and with good reason, with a series of terrible accidents unfolding one after the other over a period of three days. With personal reminiscences, Matt and Richard tell the story of what happened and how F1 came to lose two much loved drivers in consecutive days. Plus, Richard poignantly shares his reflections on attending Senna's intense, emotional funeral in Sao Paulo. Next time: Matt and Richard discuss the aftermath and lasting legacy of Imola '94. When Fernando Alonso eventually decides to hang up his helmet, he'll rightly be remembered as one of the finest drivers as his generation - but also as someone who could and probably should have won even more, had he made some different career choices. On the latest episode of The Race F1 Rewind, Edd Straw and Mark Hughes examine the formative years of Ayrton Senna's F1 career, and a time when the Brazilian regularly ruffled the feathers of more established drivers with his scintillating speed and unusual single-mindedness. While his later championship-winning years with McLaren were where his megastardom was cemented, Edd and Mark explain how Senna's three seasons at Lotus (from 1985 to 1987) provided the crucial foundation for his legendary career and set the template for the 'young driver in a hurry' prototype since replicated by modern F1 greats.
